What the fuck is going on with all the goddamned self-censorship online? It’s so shitty and depressing to see people proactively capitulate to these damn cunts and cocksuckers in power. Really pisses me off.

    D’oh, forgot tits…

People have developed their habits from posting to popular social sites that have heavy handed moderation or word filters. I’ve known a lot of people who have some really creatively worded insults to get around Call of Duty’s ridiculous word filter for example.

It fucking sucks though, and I love that the fediverse doesn’t seem to care about profanity at all. Maybe there is an instance or two, but I haven’t run across any.

I understand, was just trying to shoehorn the 7 words into a semi-satirical post.

Still, sucks that the response to censorship is to capitulate in advance. I’m all for creative insults for the sake of being creative but it’s way beyond that right now.

I am known to be rather stubborn though, so my instinct in such situations is to get even mouthier.

If I could and wanted to post on Reddit, I would post nothing without it being corrected by an AI, and designed to follownall the rules.

Before I started posting on Lemmy I didn’t know this was for monetising. I thought it was internet etiquette and I did the same. I thought people found it rude, like here you can’t say retard, for instance.

You see that everywhere and you don’t know why, so you start following it too. I’m happy some people complained when I did it. I feel like I’ve lost a burden.

I wonder how many people do that as well not knowing it’s meant to please corporations.

I’m of the opinion that no such thing as “a slur” exists - only the intention defines something as a slur or not.

I can call say “oh, you’re so intelligent, friend” and - depending on my meaning, intonation, etc., both “intelligent” might be a slur (implicating “idiot”), and “friend”.

One of my favourite examples is the word “cunt”. In the US it’s one of the most horrific slurs you can throw at someone, maybe only topped by “the n-word*”. In the UK it’s a pretty hefty slur, but nothing to write home about. In Australia it’s just a word you throw around, might be a slur (“fuck off, you shit cunt!”), but might be actually friendly (“you’re a mad cunt, mate!”).

And the word “retard” is fascinating in itself, because it used to be a medical term for mentally challenged people. IIRC it denoted a specific level of low IQ in a person (together with “idiot”, and “moron”).

So, yeah, slurs don’t exist. Intentions matter.

          * saying all that I’m a realist and understand who auto-moderation works. I’m not going to risk getting banned for saying the whole thing, so I’m sticking to “n-word”

Fuck, [dog, bull, any kind]shit, tits, pussy ass bitch, hoe oi cunt, removed nazi degenerative cocksuckers, radical junk fuckface etc. But is it allowed to write n-word or something similar in non-racist context and not only once? (before get banned) Depends on the instances and reports/moderator’s mood 🤔 Also i don’t find any of the mentioned slur cunning or inventive, tho some just fits various situations, i’d prefer to see words and phrases i haven’t seen before, something ironically cool or so hard to identify as humiliation or contempt… like real shit

Edit: wait, word that starts with re- and than smoothly continues with tard and if you feel like it ends with -ed was removed before nazi. Sus as fuck to me 👀

Edit 2: kurwa, gotta reality check lemmy now

I’m quite certain that if you actually asked Dick van Dyke about this, he’d likely have a similar response, lol

There’s a very old joke, which is very long but basically “new guy tries to get an agent, demonstrates a lot of talents, but we’ve got to do something about his name” which (punchline) is Penis Van Lesbian.

Anyone see Technology Connections’ video on the TV Guardian, the swear filter device for analog TV? Ben Eater tore one down and dumped the EEPROM to find it apparently had a specific exception for Dick Van Dyke.

I saw a meme screenshot of a Twitter post recently where they censored the word:

<hidden as to not offend anyone>

    “stole”

How can he “officially” turn 100?

It’s not like the Guinness book has to recognize it before it becomes true.

Some people count age from conception, but it’s only official if you count from birth.
