It’s even a bad image for their intended purpose, because it evokes empathy for the person crying in handcuffs.

I guess since the person making it and the philistine machine that produced it both have no understanding of empathy nor art, that was lost on the generators of this image.

You’ve missed out on the last several decades of Republican rhetoric, tears of “their enemies” is exactly what they want. They know they’re the bad guys and revel in it.

This isn’t like tears of their enemies though, it just evokes empathy. I haven’t cried in a long time, don’t cry often, and didn’t cry about this image. It’s just a sad image.

It’s close to actual reality, where a lady probably previously working in a kitchen in a hairnet is sad that she’s being deported, and some villainous, stone-faced everyman tries to look tough while standing in front of a flag.

Usually they add in some fascist elements that make it look more glorious to be a sack of shit, but they didn’t even do that with this image.

Yeah. It’s white, military authority literally standing on the side of the flag. They’re crying because they’re being handcuffed “probably because they’re gonna be sent back to their shithole country cuz they came here illegal.”

Perhaps you think this is more empathetic because of the art style but this is rote, flag-hugger imagery. Except this was probably produced by bot and the poster was too lazy to run the gen more than twice.

It does for you. For the intended audience, it makes them cheer and jeer at the ‘stupid brown woman’ ‘finally getting her comeuppance’ for ‘daring to disrespect the flag by being an illegal’.

They have no sympathy or empathy. They want to see PoC crying in chains as they are led off by white officers. To them, that means the system is working.

If this wasn’t posted by the White House account, I’d definitely believe it was posted by someone against the deportations.

It’s an innocent looking woman bawling her eyes out while being arrested. Why would they think this would help their anti-immigration cause?

I mean, I actually know why. Because that’s what the conservatives want. They know innocent people are being arrested and denied due process. It’s not that they don’t care - they actively want it.

Go look at /r/conservative on Reddit. These people are cheering Rubio on after he announced that visaholders are being deported due to something they said or protested with no evidence being offered. And I’m not joking or exaggerating.

Didn’t you notice her skin is dark, and she’s fat? Also probably something about her hair. These obvious signs point to the true evil inside her, you see! Only a bleeding heart satanic liberal atheist could see that and think she’s an innocent woman!

I love Porco Rosso. The theme of the golden age of aviation is something I love. Barely 10 years ago I wrote what would be my first novella in a setting that would be a dieselpunk fantasy that would invoke that era and a fantasy ww2 where Nazi like enemies are fought.

But the come back of Nazis in the real world blasted my creativity. I could no longer make what seemed to me a distant era separate from what is happening now. The result is my own planned fantasy universe that had been building in my mind for years was just crushed.

Remember that writing is also for processing (emotionally) the shit that is going on.

I know it is your work and you do with it what you want.

Even then I want to suggest just to write your voice against what is happening today in whatever way you want.

It may be in the style you imagined or you may just shelve this particular style for a while.

But writers are always needed to shout the voice of those who “can’t do so by themselves”

So there is some context to it. She has been arrested for smuggling Fentanil, reentered the US again and got arrested once more.

The image is making fun of her specifically, not so much the all out “immigrants are bad and nobody cares if they cry” message that is suggested by not posting said context with it. Making fun of sonedoby in this way can be m condemned morally too of course, but it’s not how people ITT are aporachig the issue.

This is the kind of “I want my worldview reassured so I will ignore the context” behaviour that I see a lot on the right. The more I am on Lemmy, the more I see this same aporach.

So this is nothing more than left wing propaganda.

I know this will get me some downvotes, but I encourage you to argue why I am wrong too. Because I think I am right now, but I am open to change my mind.

Warning for everyone else: This “both sides” thing is a typical tactic used by alt-right (and even fascists)to muddy the water, making us questioning if we should punch up or down.

Yes, there are some cases where “both sides” talk may make sense.

But what determines if it makes sense or not is the following question:

“Is the criticism against punching up or is it a criticism against punching down?”

“Punching up” means punching the privileged elites (example: talking bad of shareholders for making our lives worse)

Punching down is what this comment is doing, which is making excuses for harmful behavior against a minority (Remember that human’s right are a right for any and every person)

So, remember, just like with comedy, NEVER punch down (never make the oppressed lives worser)

Do Punch Up! (Make the oppressors lose their grip)

You are not engaging with my criticism.

I’ll refrase it, maybe I was unclear the first time.

          1. The Comic is about one specific insident, which is provided with the original.

          2. The picture here stirps it of that context.

Hence the picture here is suggesting that the original tweet made fun of ALL immigrants. Most peoples posts here are working from the assumption that this is the case.

Im not saying it is okay to make fun of this woman. A person smuggling Fentanil (if that is even true) still does not deserve to be mocked in this way.

I saying it is not okay to strip the tweet of the context, because it makes the goverment look worse on purpose (making fun of all immigrants, not one specific case). And yes, that is a tactic used by the right lot. I’m not saying “both sides do this so it’s okay when it happens on the right”. I’m saying the left should be better than that.

The goverment are all ready acting like fashists. There are plenty of things to be critical of that are ture - why try to play up something like this? Why lie?

No “both sides are equaly bad”. Just a “our side should be above this”.

            I agree with your sentiment.

The cartoon is clearly in extremely bad taste and dehumanizing.

However, the context that she had been previously convicted for fentanyl trafficking is important.

It’s tough though, because if we put the cartoon aside, this is technically what they should be doing. I don’t disagree with deporting felon immigrants.

But then you consider all the history of this administration that got us here… it’s really hard to agree with them.

I don’t disagree with deporting immigrants that have been shown, trough due process, to have committed crimes.

I disagree with making fun of one of them with bad AI pictures.

I also don’t think this comic shows how the Trump government has no empathy for immigrants.

That is better shown by their actions: Deporting 250 Venezuelans to a foreign prison without due process for example.

I belive that, in the face of such clear evidence that they regard immigrants as sub-humans, there is no need to take a comic out of context to make your point.

With you on that. This is a bit of a “bad example.”

And someone looking in from the outside could totally make the conclusion that “they (lemmy) are totally taking this out of context! They’re a felon!”

Like you say, there’s a menagerie of actions done by this administration that are dangerous and telling of their goals.

For even more context, this specific post has to be seen with other posts and comments made by the administration.

For example, the deportation ASMR video I also linked. Or Trump’s statement “they’re poisoning the blood of our country.” Or his statement “they’re not humans, they’re animals.” There are many others.

The larger trend of these instances is to dehumanize a specific group of people. So while this specific instance in isolation may not be sufficient to infer their larger message, when it is seen in the larger context then it becomes clear.

Yes, I agree. I by no means are trying to argue that the administration is NOT dehumanising immigrants (and Transfolk. And we all know it won’t stop there).

I’m just pointing out that we don’t need to make up things (or in this case ommit context), especially given the vast amount of clear evidence that we have for the administrations stand.
