I self censor a ton on here, are you kidding me? I have blocked every news and politics related instance I could find and still, the instances that are left are filled with political brain rot from the most unhinged extremist black and white thinking leftists online.
The only reason I’m still here is because I have a small handful of instances that I actually enjoy frequenting, where people are trying to make a healthy environment to speak with one another and share thoughts and ideas that aren’t always about politics.

Idk man some people myself included like discussing and/or arguing something. A lot of people argue impolitely or misrepresent points, but a huge portion of lemmy users have autism or other neurodivergence, so sometimes they’re not good at picking up nuance or what the other person actually meant. Also, most people in general are tribal so I think what you’re asking for might be impossible on an unrestricted platform.
I have had tons of actually good discussions on lemmy, I can link you some if you want, but it sounds like you’re seeing people say “trump just broke 5 court orders and fired all the judges who disagreed with him, then illegaly sent the national guard to Oregon. This is fascism” and saying “you can’t call everyone you don’t like a fascist!!” Those at least fascist-leaning actions. Do I think it’s actual fascism? No. But all of those actions are the dictionary definition of fascism, so if someone calls someone taking many fascist actions in succession a fascist… idk maybe hyperbole but not that extreme. It’s like calling Bernie sanders a socialist. It’s like well not really but I know what you mean.

Self censorship is when you refrain from engaging in certain topics, not when you do blatantly obvious word replacement. Censorship is about preventing the dissemination of ideas, not the dissemination of words.
Self censoring can also be when you avoid talking about an entire topic. But you’re right, it’s not when you block a community or person.

Sure, blocking people and instances isn’t exactly self censorship, but it was something I started doing after experiencing multiple instances of people attacking me for words I used, assuming I was a fascist for using a word they apparently got triggered by and completely ignoring and flat out lying about the context of me using the word in my comment. One time it was the word woke. Apparently you can’t write that in any comment in any context without being a fascist to these idiots.
It was a very disappointing experience to be attacked like that by people who would twist the observable truth to make shit up about you when this was supposed to be a place where people could talk freely. So I started avoiding topics and using certain words while on here even after blocking instances and people. Mostly because I just don’t feel like having to deal with psychotic retards who think reality and context doesn’t matter and that anything to the right of total communist domination is fascism. . . It’s not really surprising that self hosted decentralized open source platforms became popular with the Linux crowd, and it’s not really surprising that the Linux crowd are leftists.

Honestly, my experience is that the Linux crowd are some of the most wholesome people on here, but otherwise I mostly agree with you. I was very quickly disillusioned about this platform being any better than all the social media shit I had just left behind. There are still good people and instances here and I hold on to the ones I have found, but the rest of my Lemmy experience has been very disappointing.

There is no perfect social media experience. Politics can and will and have always been a part of people interacting online, but it used to be more balanced where people would also talk about their interests and geek out about things that makes them, you know, happy.
Lemmy has plenty of potential to have that balance, but politics bleeds into everything and when I say politics I mean the most angry, vitriolic and hateful version of it. There are ways to talk about politics where it is fruitful, interesting and enlightening. On Lemmy it is none of those things. It is just angry people projecting their misery onto everyone and everything around them. It doesn’t get dumber than that and I want no part of it, so I block it.
Ignoring politics doesn’t make them go away. You’re only making your life worse for yourself if you’re not saying on top of the latest political news and not voting in every election.
I use Lemmy in the same way I used Reddit back in the day: a time waster at work.
