Why would they need to do that? Just go to a gun show. Conduct a “private purchase” of a Mauser. Kill some vermin. Go back to live your life. The gun probably isn’t connected to that person in any traceable way.
AFAIK some signs of usage are on the gun and left on his hands from the pressure when firing shortly after the shot was fired? Also I thought every gun in the USA is labeled with a code to identify them? I thought because of this they could also sink the gun into some random river or water-body. I guess this would be hard to find.
They have serial numbers, but many states don’t require firearm registration or recording private sales. Back when I lived in the States, the state I lived in required an initial background check if purchasing from a retailer. After that, it could change hands five times with no records.
