This isn’t directed at you necessarily, but AI and LLMs/image gen are not interchangeable. AI has had a hand in sciences for a while already and has been increasingly helpful in recent years as there’s been more investment in the technology. LLMs don’t seem to be a net positive, and may never be, but AI as a tool can do some amazing things that people just cannot without it.
The problem with this is that “AI” is such a punning term that covers so many different technologies there is nothing global to all of them.
So people tend to use “AI” as a shorthand for whatever is the most recently hyped technology. (Keeping up with random tech term changes is hard for the uninitiated/uninterested, after all.)
Properly what most people are moaning about these days are “LLM(beciles)” and other forms of “(de)generative AI”.
That’s fair. I was just mentioning this because the original commenter said ai could be so much better, and often people that say that are dog piled on even though the are generally referring to science ai and the people dog piling are referring to LLMs. I didn’t see dog piling, but i was just bringing it up in general. I wanted to remind people that ai can be and has been used for good and that technology can further human progress, it’s just capitalism that’s using this in ways that are destructive due to the profit motive. Humanity shouldn’t let companies own the idea of progress. Progress is for the people and denying ai because capital is currently using it for their aims robs us of our ability to dream of a certain version of a better world. Ai can be part of our future, but it won’t need to be shoehorned in by corporations. It can fit in where we want it to if we give ourselves the chance and are able to make it to that stage.
