A microwave plate is the part that spins during heating. It can be removed so it’s easier to clean. Removing it means that food will potentially heat unevenly and there’s usually a gear that the plate attaches to sticking out of the floor like a wart. Anything being heated will have to balance or lean on a slowly spinning gear which will potentially cause other problems.

The joke is that you can’t just buy the plate and will have to just…suck it up. AFAIK the plates are not standard (probably proprietary to that model/brand) so by taking it you probably have to get a whole new microwave if you want it back.

They have become fairly standard due to consolidation of global manufacturing. I’ve taken apart a half dozen over the last decade and they all had the same slow mains motor and 3 wing drive mechanism. There are probably lots of exceptions, but the parts inside are pretty simple.

if you know the size of the plate you can just go on the internets. the only real variations I see are the diameter. if it’s got bearings underneath, now those can be a bastard to size right.

              Disagree. It is textbook comedy/tragedy.

The victim has been disproportionately inconvenienced to GREAT irritation. The plate can be replaced quickly and at very little cost. The microwave is in no way damaged permanently, and indeed will still work without the plate.

Yet therein lies the absurdity. Someone went out of their way to steal your turntable. It has zero value to them. They cannot resell it or use it themselves, as all microwaves come with one.
