(Washington DC) As democrats break ranks to end the government shutdown with no concessions, leaders for the party made clear that their actions so far will guide future actions as well. “This fight was one of many we’ll face when it comes to the needs of the American people,” said Chuck Shumer to reporters, “and we can promise Americans that this is the best they’re going to get.”

The 40-day shutdown is the longest in US history, and for over a month, essential workers have been required to work for no pay, as food subsidies ran out for low income Americans last week. Some in the party say the democrats have no direction going forward, but Schumer denies this. “Sure, we lost this fight, and the president may refuse to pay some people who worked in the shut down, and it may take months to restore food subsidies. But don’t forget what we got for our efforts.”

Republicans likewise note that they won’t stop fighting until Americans have no rights, either.

      It’s trying to be satire. I don’t think anyone believes democrats are trying, on purpose, to fail. But there’s palpable anger, because there was an undertone of “okay, we’ll play like you and show you what happens” here, and they allowed all this harm, showed what republicans will allow… and then gave up. And now people are looking around and saying “who’s fighting for us.”

      That’s dangerous for both democrats and rebuplicans, because if neither side will care for you, you no longer have to vote for the least-worst choice. I hope for lots and lots of primaries like Zandani over the next few years.

    I just got a fund-raising email. No joke. Nothing against Grajalva, but it was like, “Hey! This means I can be the final signature on the petition to release the Epstein files! Please donate what you can afford to give today so that the party that caved in to Trump can continue to fight for you!” (Paraphrasing, of course.)

    Maybe it’s just me but I feel like these Lemmy-original stories don’t really belong on this sub.

    Not to knock on your writing OP (some of these are pretty funny), but if everyone posted what is basically The Onion fanfiction then this sub would be nothing but, and the selection of topics being satirized would be even more narrow than it already is.

      No.

      Although each post starting with something like “This is The Onion fanfic made by a lemmy user, not The Onion” might clear up a lot.

    with no concessions

    I don’t know how true this is. I’m not American and haven’t followed it all that closely. But I did see a post earlier today which said this:

    And what they voted for (or more accurately, as this is was a cloture vote, voted to allow a vote on) is not the same thing as was voted for in the previous fourteen votes. The new version has:

    • A full CR through January 30th;
    • A return to work for the slew of federal workers who Trump fired, and a block against him firing anyone else before January 30th;
    • Funding for the USDA - including full SNAP benefits - through next September;
    • Funding for the VA and FDA through next September;
    • Protections for the Government Accountability Office (GAO), which Trump has tried to decimate;
    • The promise of a vote on ACA subsidies no later than the second week of December.

    If that’s true, it would be very inaccurate to claim it had “no concessions”. You could certainly say that there weren’t enough concessions, but at least a few of those bullet points seem relatively significant.

      Those aren’t really concessions, Z. That’s the equivalent of me taking your your dog, your house, and your car, then giving giving the first two back with the promise that we’ll talk about your car later.
