I have no horse in this race but, as an observer, I would think it might have something to do with your immediate myopic judgement of strangers and willingness to share those judgements with vitriol, right off the bat. It’s off-putting for people who prefer meaningful discussion. Unlike reddit, people in the fediverse seem to NOT want to take out their trivial frustrations on every internet stranger they encounter, so that kind of behavior is typically frowned upon.

This aligns with what ive been calling ‘fetish’ ans ‘lust’ as it is not what i say, the meaning of the words, but the aesthetic taste. “off-putting” is analogous to being turned off by a date or disinterested in a meal. It’s an aesthetic, artistic thing. I am finding that online communication is 100% vibes (turn-on’s, turn-off’s, off-putting, good/bad taste) and 0% understanding (literal meaning of words, academic research behind assertions, logical validity).
