Austria’s Foreign Minister Beate Meinl-Reisinger said in an interview with Die Welt that Trump was ready to “hand over” Crimea and parts of eastern Ukraine to Russian President Vladimir Putin. But Putin chose to keep fighting.

The Minister said the situation is clear: Ukraine wants peace, while Russia does not. Putin would have already started negotiations to end the war if he were truly interested in peace.

Crimea has a complicated history and its relationship to/autonomy within Ukraine has been the subject of various high level discussions since 1991.

Do you know how many places have a complicated history with ethnic Germans all over the world? None of them are German territory and rightfully so.

If the crimean population wanted to secede they could have chosen a legitimate process that involves petitioning the UN, the EU, Ukraine and Russia. This has been an illegal invasion and annexation by Russia since 2014 with a half-hearted attempt at legitimization - after resettling the Ukrainians living there.

None of that is complicated, so kindly stop sprouting Russian propaganda

Wtf dude of course it has been an illegal invasion and annexation. The majority of the Crimean population until 2014 clearly did not want to be part of Russia. (And that changed since 2014 because Russia forcibly deported people). Crimea is not Russia.

That does not change the fact that Crimea has had a unique status and is not comparable to the Donbas. The Donbas is an integral part of Ukraine. Crimea has been an autonomous republic and has tried multiple times to use a legitimate process to widen their powers, which Ukraine’s centralized state model did not approve of.

I really need everyone, especially Ukrainians to understand something, the rightwing of the US including Trump is NOT Ukraine’s friend.

The reason Trump/rightwing US figures are suddenly acting like they are friends of Ukraine is because Ukraine is starting to decisively win this war and consolidate “western” military industrial complex behind longterm support for Ukraine that strategically denies a realistic pathway for Russia to achieve a victory in Ukraine.

This is Trump being a coward and jumping ship on his cronies, but even as he is doing this I think he still wants Putin to win, he just clearly simply does not think Putin can do that anymore and is acting selfishly to try to get some kind of political win out of this to help boost his horrific approval ratings in the US up some. It might be one of the only half intelligent thoughts Trump has had in awhile but it does not mean Trump or the rightwing of the US actually gives a shit about Ukraine, Europe which like the US is fantasizing about going full fascist again would do well to remember the lesson here…

Well, first of all, who is he to make such proposals to Putin, and secondly, does he think the Ukrainian people would allow this?

Putler wants Odessa so bad he’s foaming at the mouth for it like a rabbid dog. Odessa is historically significant to Russia.

I bet if that was included along with Crimea and the East Donbass states he might have considered it.
