    In case anyone was curious, the character is 酒, jiǔ in mandarin, meaning alcohol. Unsurprisingly.

        In a general “booze” sense, apparently? With the more specific nihonshu (日本酒) being used specifically for Japanese rice wine.

          How ironic that the specifically Japanese meaning uses the Chinese-based reading of 酒, while the general “booze” sense uses the Japanese-based one
