since lemm.ee is slated to be gone soon, does anyone know of any other instances with similar policies regarding defederation? i’ve always loved how i can follow communities basically wherever from here. it’s why i chose here over elsewhere. i just wanna be able to curate my own feed, but most big instances seem to have all these complicated beefs that mean i’d lose access to some communities if i moved there.
If you want a similar approach to lemm.ee for defederation:
I’d stay away from Lemmy.today until they start to deal with obvious spammers on their instance.
One four-day old account there has almost five hundred posts last time I checked, which is more then a post every six minutes.
This is exactly what I was hoping to find. I typically browse through all and picked lemm.ee for their moderation style.
I’m sad to see it go.
I think both of those are perfect suggestions. Being a huge nerd with a strong moral compass, zip seemed to be one of the more similar to lemm.ee. I also heard piefed has some good policies and features!!
Thanks for the links!
Why both of them blocked lemm.ee lol.
They did not, you’re looking at linked instances
Oh, I thought all of them were banned instances 😅
What are their stances on threads federation? I always forget what the link to that site that records that is.
Thanks for the suggestion!
Since the announcement thread is locked, thanks to the admins for their hard work.
lemm.ee was the best and why i stayed on lemmy. this stinks. but so long and thanks for all the fish
Joining in to the general thanks to the administration for running this instance. I migrated here from vlemmy I think? I don’t even remember it’s been forever in internet years. But lemm.ee is (soon was) good to be in. Sending the best wishes to the team.
Where will I go? Dunno. I’m eyeing .zip but also looking for other alternatives. Might reinvigorate my fedia presence in the meantime.
A question: is if recommended to unsub from local communities before lemm.ee sundowns?
A question: is if recommended to unsub from local communities before lemm.ee sundowns?
No, as those communities will announce where they go, and organize. Examples on [email protected] and [email protected]
Thanks!
I’ve moved to https://piefed.social/ - I really like the ability there to subscibe to whole topics rather than individual communities. But I’ll miss lemm.ee’s defederation policy.
Lemmy clients won’t work there?
I am out of the loop with piefed (I don’t even know if it is another Lemmy instance, it seems it is lol).
I am too attached to Summit and Voyager to stop using Lemmy at all.
It’s a totally different project with a different codebase, but is Lemmy/activitypub compatible. Currently only one app supports it (interstellar), but more are coming (thunder).
but more are coming (thunder)
This is awesome. Seems like a great oportunity to finally look into piefed.
Any idea about an ETA?
No idea, I’m just regurgitating another person’s comment who mentioned that thunder was in progress 😅
no worries, at least I know to look forward to it. Happy there is at least another app for it already, but I got used to Thunder
but more are coming (thunder).
I see, TIL, it seems like I can wait a bit then.
Hmm 404 code 🤔
it’s an announcement saying that Interstellar now works with Piefed: https://interstellar.jwr.one/
Oh I see, thanks for the heads up.
that sounds interesting, though i can’t seem to find where to see their blocklist
Unfortunately they have large blocklist: https://piefed.social/post/816776#comment_6416768
I chose lemmy.blahaj.zone since most of the communities I participate in are there and they have been nothing but kind to me. I highly recommend it for other queer people who want to have a peaceful community free of transphobia.
If you’re considering non-Lemmy instances, then I can recommend kbin.earth, it’s a MBin instance that has a similar approach to the defederation
no Voyager, no deal. end of story. not changing apps again, it’s the whole damn reason I’m on this site to begin with. piefed is worthless to me right now.
Voyager seems to work fine with the newly migrated communities.
Try [email protected] for example, the official migrated community of [email protected]
Unfortunately, adding a piefed user account doesn’t work because Vger fails at the capcha step.
So register at a different Lemmy instance, and access piefed communities.
At least until Vger gets fixed.
In general, while it’s already huge, sh.itjust.works errs on the side of careful defederation. Afaik, none of the big instances are defederated at all.
It’s pretty stable too. I think it’s been down maybe twice for any significant length of time.
That’s the two biggest factors in why it’s where my main account is.
So, it’s an option for sure.
A friend of mine is on lemdro.id, and he’s able to reach all the usual instances. Same with dbzero, though they have a bit more focused set of policies. Both are very stable as well.
About the only instance that you’ll run into trouble accessing from most is hexbear or whatever it’s called now. All the other big/biggish ones are usually not defederated widely.
Hexbear is still called that. They were able to recover their domain after all. By my calculations, they appear to be in the top 10 largest lemmy instances by MAU, top 5 by number of accounts, and number 2 lemmy instance by number of posts, out of the regular user-driven (not automated cross-posting) instances, behind only lemmy.world.
Good to know.
I really appreciate how well-ran piefed.social is!
Wait what’s going on with lemm.ee? Do I have to make a new act? What about the local communities I follow?
Lemm.ee is shutting down at the end of this month.
You will need to create a new account on a new instance. You can export your current subscriptions, blocks, and favorited comments and posts by clicking on the Export JSON file in your profile settings page, which you can then use to import at your new instance. You’ll need to export that file before the 30th.
To help find a new instance, check out this comment.
<3 thank you
You’re welcome ^^
I wish you well finding a new home!
Oh and as for the local communities you follow, they will have to move as well, so be sure to check if there’s a post saying where they’ll go at some point.
Seems pretty prone to defederating other instances.
It defederated from Hexbear at least, so yes. I absolutely love that instance - I whole-heartedly recommend the admin team there, but if someone is looking for federation with instances such as that one, that is not what it is about.
It is a fantastic recommendation to make to someone coming in from Reddit.
definitely not what i’m looking for, but thanks for the suggestion
Come to hexbear.net! We aren’t a bunch of scary online tankie, we will answer questions asked in good faith, and most of us do real political organizing! We also have the best emotes of any instances.
it is literally my birthday so come on over 2 hexbear
sorry I already finished middle school, why would I want to go back there
Hexbear houses some of the worst people I have ever experienced on Lemmy. Do not go there unless you are truly toxic.
Hexbear is friendly and cool.
Strong disagreement there. Hexbear users frequently brush against liberals and anti-Communists, but as an actual space it’s not toxic at all, in my experience. If you consider yourself a Marxist or Anarchist, you’ll probably fit in well, if not then you won’t, simple as that.
The real thing is that lemm.ee has very minimal defederation, but Hexbear uses defederation quite deliberately to curate a safe space for marginalized comrades, and doesn’t tolerate liberalism, so it isn’t a replacement for lemm.ee outright, just a good option.
This you?
I think they were talking about people like that, people like you.
Yep, someone was being genuinely racist, talking about how Chinese people live in filth and their infrastructure is held up with duct tape, that they eat fake meat and fake tofu, etc. There’s a difference between critique of the CPC and veering off into racism, which is why I reported the comments, and then got banned for it for a day. This was the comment:
The majority of the comment is baseless chauvanism of Chinese people themselves, not their government, such as when they say that the “national sport is to harrass other nations” or that “they eat fake tofu, fake meat, etc.” There were many other comments on that thread that weren’t thinly veiled racism, but still attacked the CPC, which I didn’t report, I reported this person specifically because the comment uses “criticism of the CPC” as a veil for racism. Even if the mods disagreed, reporting three such comments from the same person is not report abuse.
If you scroll to the bottom of my modlog, you can sse that I got banned from [email protected] for “racism.” What happened, was the moderator made a rant about DEI in video games, and I called them out on it. They threw a tantrum, banned me, then deleted their account, leaving [email protected] unmoderated and dead.
The point is, don’t trust the modlog too much, if no context is linked. Comment removals are trustworthy, ban reasons need more investigation if they aren’t accompanied by examples. In this case, I’d say the moderators actually outted themselves by punishing me for reporting content that can absolutely be seen as racist, even if they disagreed. They could have ignored the reports, but chose to say that it’s a bannable offense to report this content.
It looks like he was calling out racism. Do you think mods can’t be racist?
Criticism of the CCP alone is not racist, reporting it as racism is report abuse.
Americans often launder their racism as political critique. Hexbears are critical of the CCP themselves and they can tell the difference.
It wasn’t criticism of the CPC alone. This was the comment:

Do you not see forum moderators as people who have their own agendas and biases or do you think that something like that can be read uncritically?
And secondly, you’re getting real Aaron Sorkin pompous over something that boils down to “they report false positives on the subject of racism” and it just makes you look bad
i dont agree anarchists fit in, i love it from the outside cause theres some great memes and yall can be very funny, but then a lot of people start defending governments guilty of subjugation and shit.
It’s a Left Unity space, plus historically Anarchists and Marxists work together more often than not. The Anarchists on Hexbear can speak for why they enjoy it.
We push back against imperialist propaganda blitzes against official enemy states, so yeah, probably not suitable for most anarchists.
if not then you won’t
to curate a safe space
doesn’t tolerate
Yeah sounds like a good option for those of us looking to move to the exact opposite of lemm.ee then
That’s why I said at the end that it’s a very different instance than lemm.ee. I was pushing against the idea that Hexbear is filled with the worst types of people, which is wrong.
You say that like your instance isn’t so toxic that your admins gave up maintaining it
Counter point: I’m a drunk cute Dog girl
I’m the special birthday girl, yr a weirdo who is obsessed with oppressing others for inexcusable cheap treats, and it’s my special day!!!
UwU
Yr toxic to call my instance toxic for not just rebuking our certifiable facts/emotional labor. But mostly for being mean to the Gemini borzoi!!!
Send me money n I’ll use it for means testing, DM yr cashapp, social fash. GG
I genuinely can’t tell if you’re doing a bit?
hexbear is fun and all, but i’d rather just visit. too many other places defederate from ya’ll, for reasons which are quite beyond my ken.
and happy birfday! 🎉
When I posted there in good faith all I got were death threats.
Doesn’t seem to be the case, looks like you got into one fight regarding electoralism but you’ve even been upvoted on Hexbear in numerous other occasions.
I guess several people saying they would kill me if they ever met me irl, and claiming their statements were “real, actionable threats” is just a typical online fight in a healthy community.
I didn’t see any of that when glancing through your comments on Hexbear, mind providing an example with the context?
no instance can ever beat the hex emotes and happy birthday!
We aren’t a bunch of scary online tankie,
I have an old registration with lemy.lol. Any reason why it wouldn’t work out?
https://lemy.lol/u/Sibshops - Turns out it doesn’t support IPv6, so i went with https://lemmy.myserv.one/
I’m looking for the same things as you. An instance that isn’t part of the big instance fights, mostly leaves it to the user to block instances/communities (except for the illegal ones of course), uses the latest version of lemmy, and defederates from Threads. So far lemmy.zip seems to fit the bill. I’ve also been looking at infosec.pub (because my work aligns with it) and lemmy.cafe, but both are defederated with .ml, which I only wish to see because there are a lot of active non-politics communities hosted there.
So far lemmy.zip seems to fit the bill.
You will see, it’s great
Thanks for the recommendation! Do you happen to know where lemmy.zip is hosted? I’m trying to read the instance docs but can’t find it.
Finland.
Got it, thanks! See you on wherever the movies and tv communities end up!
