It may be totally unrelated to your family, but depending on your cultural background, only eating with your right hand is pretty common across the Middle East. I believe it’s because the left hand is usually associated with wiping your bum, so it was best to keep that hand away from your food. Some folks can actually get a little offended/weirded out if you eat with your left hand at their table. I love these little cultural anecdotes.
I’ve heard this before and it always makes me think of how terrible I would be at wiping with my left hand. I don’t think I’ve ever done it. My left hand is so much less dextrous than my right, I imagine it would be very messy.
