For content creators it needs a built-in editor instead of forcing every video to be one take. And for consumers it needs a really good recommendation algorithm. The reason TikTok is so successful is that its absurdly efficient (and incredibly invasive) algorithm will find you content you’d like within probably minutes of setting up an account.

I like that this exists, but I don’t think it’s ready for mass adoption yet.

yeah, as much as I hate algorithm-based social media short form content needs it. you scroll from one video to the next with no way to pick and choose which ones you interact with. normally you can just not click on a post and it gets nothing from you, but short form content does not allow that. that means the next video has to be chosen for you, and that regular feeds will not work. that mean you have to have some kind of algorithm or you will have to interact with tons of videos you have no interest in to get to one that is worth watching to you (which is the current state of loops).

Had a look out of curiosity only scrolled through about 5 in my browser but noticed the audio still continued from previous videos. I’d say that’s rather a big issue.

Btw, you can get it on Android through Obtainium and then it’ll keep itself up to date, rather than just regularly getting a new .apk. That should do until the f-droid availability shows up

I guess it is an “improvement” that we can replace corporate brain rot with community brain rot, but this isn’t going to change my mind about short form video.

Funny enough I tried a few videos without signing up, and it doesn’t seem as bad? It’s a HUGE improvement, in fact.

Tiktok was putting me off because main content in its peak was “teenagers dancing.”

Meanwhile the “average age in lemmy is 20 years older than reddit” rule applies to loops. I doubt they will ever have “npc streams.”

Still dislike short-form content tho so I will pass, but pretty good community nonetheless.

I mean it depends on what you want to get from social media. I would argue that things got worse afterwards when it stopped being teenagers dancing and started being right-wing influencers spewing their propaganda. Ultimately, social media should be made by the people contributing to it and how it develops depends on what the users want, not on what you want.

I do not understand the desire to have alternatives to the world‘s dumbest format. We had good video platforms that worked. Users had agency. Short form video stripped everything away that made the internet a great place once. It‘s poison for society. It needs no alternatives. It just needs to implode.
