I don’t frequent right-wing spaces, but are many genuinely upset about the BPP resurgence in Philly? If so, what are the mental gymnastics?

    PREACH!

I work with an Alex Jones fan… He went batshit a few years ago when up in Michigan, black men with semi-automatic rifles were seen publicly protecting their representatives after the whole MAGA kidnapping thing unfolded.

His line was “The blacks are being trained for the race war!” And I scoffed and asked him if he remembered the video I showed him of the gang bangers in Chicago having a running gun battle as they tore up the streets in their cars… I was like, “Dude, the brothers already know how to use guns… What do you think the metal detectors in high schools in the inner cities for the last few decades has been about?”

Oh yeah… the penny dropped and he went quiet about it pretty quick.

Which was amazing because at the time the guy never shut up about all the MAGA conspiracies. Drove me up a tree.

Pot was criminalized in many states staring in the 1920s along with cocaine and heroin. It was taxed in 1937 as a commodity crop (hemp) and used in ropemaking for the Second World War… At the state levels, (esp. in the south) because it was well known as being used in the Jazz commmunity and “jazz cigarettes” represented moral peril to the innocent white women who’d smoke it and get hooked and end up fucking the black men. (And oh God no… we can’t have that!)

By 1970, it was fully criminalized nationally esp. because of the whole drug culture of the late 60’s and the Vietnam anti-war protest movement. It wasn’t just pot, but LSD, speed, quaaludes… all of it.

Huey Long’s politics and the Black Panthers were one part of it, but the entire thing was in response to the boomers finally shaking off the post-war straitjackets they’d been raised in…

If you want a good look at the culture of those fucked up years and the ideation of the times that MAGA is pretending they want to “get back to” check out David Hoffman’s youtube channel

      It’s amazing stuff.

“You want to know what this was really all about?

The Nixon campaign in 1968, and the Nixon White House after that, had two enemies: the antiwar left and Black people. You understand what I’m saying? We knew we couldn’t make it illegal to be either against the war or Black, but by getting the public to associate the hippies with marijuana and Blacks with heroin, and then criminalizing both heavily, we could disrupt those communities. We could arrest their leaders, raid their homes, break up their meetings, and vilify them night after night on the evening news. Did we know we were lying about the drugs? Of course we did.”

-John Ehrlichman, President Richard Nixon’s domestic policy chief

Whoo! Didn’t know that quote directly, thank you for sharing it… Erlichmqn was one of the people that while I was growing up, my mother would absolutely hiss about. People loathed him.
