Since the New Year is here, what better way to ring it in than with a new Flotilla member and a drink o’ rum?
Over the past couple of days, Qk from Quokk.au reached out to us about the possibility of joining up with the Fediverse Anarchist Flotilla. This was really cool news for all of us, and imo they will be a great addition!
What’s the Fediverse Anarchist Flotilla and isn’t it a bit of a mouthful?
Yes it is, let’s call it FAF for short. Lol.
For the full deets of what that means exactly, check out db0’s original post on the topic Announcing anarchist.nexus and the launch of the Fediverse Anarchist Flotilla.
But in short, it means:
- Same rules - Quokk.au will adopt AN/dbzer0’s existing rules and policies.
- Same staff - We’ll have common Matrix rooms for admin discussions and user appeals, and provide mutual aid to other instances as required (e.g. if someone needs a break).
- Common governance - Likewise, we will share a common federation/defederation list and ban-list. Notably for Quokk.au that also means enabling federation with places like Hexbear.net and Feddit.org, unless as a flotilla we decide that this should change.
Fire away if anyone has any questions, but make sure you read the FAF announcement post first, because it explains a lot!

N.B. Quokk.au will be holding its own vote on joining the flotilla at the same time as ours. I’ll add the linked post once they are both posted.
Edit: here’s the Quokk.au post

Good bot.
Lately instance seems slower, am I doing something wrong here or is it my region?
Not sure matey, if anything dbzer0 has been more snappy lately for me since db0 got the bots under control.

Yes from me.
I haven’t put any personal scrutiny on quokk.au or its governance directly, to be clear, relying on the lazy shorthand of assuming the admin team did that leg-work.
But quokka.au is one of very few instances that have basically only positive connotations in my mind, just in the sense of an accidentally accumulated subconscious ledger, built over time.
Bit tough to articulate and old guy hand-wavy, but I guess:
- I’m easy to annoy
- they never do
- the above is a lot more challenging to achieve than it sounds, when we’re talking about moderating/administering an internet community, and about what things annoy me in particular, which suggests important things (to me) about how the place is run
Erp, think I need to back up. I’d kinda filed Deceptichum into their own category in my head, they’re distinct enough that I don’t really notice the instance when I come across their comments.
Still a yes from me, and I often agree with that person’s POV (and sometimes I find it fruitlessly hostile, or etc.). Just acknowledging a big contradictory hole in my “quokk.au users never annoy me” statement.

I’m all in. Great admin, and before this instance existed (i was still bugging you all about it on the matrix all the time lol) quokk.au was the unofficial anarchist.nexus, it’s only right they get to be the second real one!
That’s so true.

In full transparency, I dont know much about this instance other than recognizing it as the domain of a couple power users I’m not a huge fan of.
I recognize that is a pretty shit reason to oppose a new flotilla member, but im just not excited about bringing them in on topics of governance. I have a high tolerance for federation and differences in moderation styles, but I guess I have less for shared governance.
Quokk.au only has one admin - Qk - and she’s been active in our Matrix rooms for a while now and seems really nice! Their admin has agreed to adopt our existing governance processes and policies since we already have a lot of stuff in place. So nothing much will change for existing flotilla members really. Hopefully that will put your mind at ease.
The main difference in terms of governance is that now we have another experienced admin to bounce ideas off and exchange expertise with, and of course Quokk.au users will be able to propose policy changes and vote in exactly the same way as the rest of the flotilla members. But bearing in mind the relative size of our userbases, and also the fact they are pretty well aligned with us already, do you still have a strong concern about that aspect? Plus any flotilla user can initiate a “radical recall” of a mod or admin in the flotilla if they go off the rails.
That’s alright, i’m glad to hear Qk is a good fit!

I for one would greatly welcome the Quokka community! I have regularly had amazing positive interactions with their people, and think it’s great to share the Fedi ocean with them.

This would be a great sloop to add to the fleet!
All jokes aside, I’m glad to see third party instances express an interest in joining this experiment. I didn’t foresee other admins wanting to subsume their power, but I’m happy to be proven wrong!
PS: It seems the thread on quokk.au is local-only, so it didn’t federate over to us.
is this a webring? No need for a webring when we got apub
Abstain vote — neither for nor against.
I’m new to the Fediverse, but it seems like unifying instances goes against the ideal of decentralization. Thoughts on that point? I mean, so like if I have a disagreement with staff on one instance and they ban me, all instances in the flotilla ban me? I can see the benefit and also the other side.
Otherwise it sounds like strength in bunkers which is a good thing.
I see it as a second layer of federation, so we’re sort of extra-federating with certain instances, for some specific goals, and while I have some mixed feelings I broadly agree with the goals and I do think this is strictly better than somehow merging with them (actual centralization).
Primary benefits as I understand them (probably infinitely debatable, regarding how desirable or even accurate any of this is):
- makes it obvious which instances are likely to be good fits for me, should I not like the direction this one takes over time
- makes the admins of each instance less isolated, with all the support that entails (I think admins of internet communities have natural and very real pulls toward what I guess I’d call estrangement or developing unhealthy views toward their user bases or others)
- makes it harder for motivated bad actors to balkanize leftist lemmy instances and thereby keep leftist ideals like “mutual aid” and “sharing wealth” sounding like fringe ideas
- this last one is hard to phrase, but essentially moderation policies across the fediverse have different weights or impacts depending on the size of their user base (e.g. the atrocious moderation on .world impacts a lot more users than it would on a smaller instance) and this formalization of policy feels like a small way to improve the overall weight of my preferred style of moderation

Don’t attack the little quokka raft. What did they do to you?
quokk.au joining the flotilla? all I can say is ARRRG, MATEY!

Arrrrrr!

Yarr!
Also, Happy New Yarr!
Aye, they shall toil in the spoils o’ the flotilla! Yar!
No thanks.
@[email protected] Out of curiosity, why would you downvote on a comment like this? It will have no effect on the vote, additionally you are not even a dbzer0 user. Why do you even care?
votes from any instance on the flotilla will count as a vote anyway, it’s not just dbzer0.
I didn’t mean it personally? Sorry if i offended you.
No offense taken. I am genuinely curious what the motivation was. Just trying to accommodate other opinions, so that I don’t cause negative feelings or thoughts. Even though not entirely avoidable, I still try to be as fair as possible
Oh i interpreted your other comment (not top-level one) aggressively, sorry, good to see you’re being thoughtful 🙂 My line of thought was that i supported the vote, and i downvoted you for being against it. But now that i’ve thought about it more, it’s pretty unfair to downvote others for speaking their opinion on a neutral vote, hence why i removed it :) Have a good new year, now!
Thanks for taking your time to elaborate. Have a wonderful 2026, my friend.

I must confess that I still don’t understand this flotilla thing, at all. It seems a good thing.
