I’m a former Catholic that left due to the corruption, harm, and hypocrisy. That said, they never paint people as categorically evil from what I remember. They don’t even consider being gay to be a sin, they just believe that any sex not for the intentional aim of procreation is a sin. Even then, sin isn’t a serious black mark because everyone sins. They will forgive even mass murderers. Still, I don’t regret walking away in the slightest.
Forgiveness is a requirement because actually abiding by the rules is impossible. It is designed that way so you’re obligated to seek forgivenes and stay within the church’s influence.
I do have a certain respect for the Catholics who tend towards “the point is to repent for your sins, not avoid sins in the first place”. There’s an honesty behind it.
Yeah that whole saga was a sin on a multitude of levels. Their penchant for keeping things in house, confidential, and being quick to forgive is the major issue there
Yeah I think it’s a mix of both. They really do forgive easily. And I say this as someone who has a loved one that was affected by their lack of action against SA. Shit, I had a teacher come onto me when I was in Catholic HS. I was 18 at least but I never did anything about it other than tell my friends.
They do clarify that gay people should be treated with respect, they just also believe that any homosexual act is gravely depraved and “intrinsically disordered” and that all gay people should just remain single and celibate.
So, technically slightly better than just saying being gay is a sin, but only barely. There are a lot of reasons I left the church, but this one was a big factor.

The Catholic Church or “they,” doesn’t believe shit. They want lots of babies because it’s much easier to carry on a religion through children than it is to bring in new followers.
Yeah that one was always one of the glaring cognitive dissonances. “God created you, and being gay isn’t a choice. That said, you must resist the urges god imbued you with and remain celibate and alone.”
You know, with that perspective it makes perfect sense now. They want the priests to do exactly that, supposedly originally to prevent bloodline dynasties, but who can really say given the secretive nature of so much shit they do at the highest levels. So if the priests can do it as an act of supposed devotion, so should every random gay person.
Meanwhile we see the priests that have devoted their lives to the church definitely cannot manage to do that, so expecting random people to is fucking ridiculous.
We can get around the sex thing by having a bff who “secretly” doses you with birth control. You just have to hint and wink and suggest and hope they get the message.
If you get pregnant, they weren’t your real friend in the first place.
I don’t know the equivalent for guys. A friend who waits in your bathroom and tackles you with a condom when you’re about to bang?

Categorically evil is more of a Calvinist thing.

In Catholicism, “hate the sin, not the sinner” is axiomatic.
It’s hard to procreate when the priests prefer sex with boys.

The cynic in me says it was more CYA than being quick to forgive.

Fuck that nonsense.

*don’t do this with more than one bff!
Man, all these religious rituals get so complicated.
