I got food stamps benefits in the past, that reapplication process was incredibly stressful because something always goes wrong due to bureaucratic fuckups I had no control over, and then I would have to wait on hold on the phone for six hours on a weekday to fix it. Obviously these people know this and want it to be even worse for everyone on the program, fuck them. They know there’s tons of people who qualify who don’t bother because of how confusing and shitty the application is.
I was on it 25 years ago and they actually gave you emergency food stamps just for walking in and filling out the paperwork, so you could eat that day. They changed that law along with most others that would be helpful to people.
Tried applying months ago, kept getting hung up and having to wait for the next step to be approved, finally gave up.
That’s approximately 42 million applications. I wonder how many people will die of hunger before they get approved. How is this not murdering US citizens, the same way cancelling USAID murdered people all over the world. smh.

Then go after the data that points to fraud.
“Nope. Just do it all over. Sorry if you’re hungry, we’ll try and process the applications asap.”
This should be just like the presumption of innocent. Feed first, then verify. If a few dishonest get through in the meantime, at least you didn’t kill the innocent.
Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins on Thursday said the Trump administration is planning to have all Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program (SNAP) beneficiaries reapply for the program due to alleged fraud.
The secretary said after receiving data on SNAP recipients from 29 red states that “186,000 deceased men and women and children in this country are receiving a check.”
“Can you imagine when we get our hands on the blue state data what we’re going to find?” she asked during a Thursday appearance on Newsmax’s “Rob Schmitt Tonight.”

(hint: it’s ZERO. checks are not used for snap benefits–ebt debit cards are, and it was the iconic coupons known as ‘food stamps’ before that).
I’d bet 99% of those deceased individuals are receiving benefits to an account that hasn’t been accessed since they died. Meaning the government just never processed the death notification to stop the benefits.
So not actually fraud, just beureaucratic incompetence inherent to these overly complex systems that would be solved by things like UBI or other real social safety nets instead of having a million qualifiers for access.
More likely the recipient died and it got processed for a couple weeks until it was processed, then the GOP misrepresents it.
180k out of 42 million is 0.42%. Maybe once they add in a few more states it’ll get up to 1%.
System already demands recipient updates every 6 to 12 months.
Another good argument for UBI to neither burden an administrative expense nor people on justifying/regulating hunger relief.
