Years ago, when I lived in Cleveland, the city discovered, on opening day of the city swimming pools, that when the maintenance crews had painted the pools before opening, they didn’t do the least amount of clean up first. They just painted over EVERYTHING - dirt, leaves, paper, etc.

They even painted over BROKEN GLASS. Apparently it had been real popular for people to throw empty bottles over the fence, and hear them smash into the empty pools. Every pool had lots of broken glass on the bottom, and the painting crews just painted right over it. It seems like that would be such a pain in the ass, that it would be easier to take 15 minutes and sweep it out first, but those losers couldn’t be bothered.

It was a big deal in the media, and pools opened a few weeks late, as they scraped the bottoms and repainted.

It’s not the focus of your story but this right here make me angry. I HATE litering. I don’t enjoy confrontation but I have given complete strangers ass chewings in the middle of the street for it. I can think of few things more selfish and entitled than treating the world like it’s your own personal trashcan.

Scientifically speaking, a bug is a special type of insect that has mouthparts for piercing and sucking. So technically, insects like flies are not bugs. However, in common language, people would refer to flies and other insects as bugs.

To find common ground between spiders and insects, we have to go back to arthropods, which includes shrimp, crabs, and barnacles, which most wouldn’t call insects or bugs.

I think it’s fine to call most insects bugs, but broadening that to spiders is a bit of a stretch IMO.

Anything that could cause a vacuum tube processing unit to malfunction when stuck inside it, is a potential bug.

I purchased an old house that was a rental for about a decade before I got it. So many nice wooden fixtures were painted white, but the paint is so stuck on so thick the scope of the project to get all of that white paint off of everything is more than I can realistically undertake
