    I don’t know where to write it so I put it here (awesome meme, my comment is offtop): I recently had a bit of free time between my PhD, activism, slacking, and just being there for my close ones. I thought, well, let’s do something good for the Fediverse. I love c/science_memes at mander.xyz, so I reasoned: let’s go to reddit and s t e a l some memes for this community. I searched for science memes on reddit and oh boy, they were crappy. Not a single one deserving to be here (if you cross-post to reddit, first stop, but also sorry I was there on a different day). Gosh it made me appreciate this place. Please, keep on being awesome and, since idk who you are and don’t want to be unrealistic, I can only wish you a median-good day.

      I think that’s part of the joke. Instead of the snappy punchline, there’s a long and tedious realistic answer that goen on long after the point has been made.

    That’s why polls are meaningless even though they are referenced, followed and reported on. Nothing is statistically significant anymore. Publish any shit that supports your position, just add a “+/-” percentage number at the end and it’ll look “professionalish”.

      Stats require a sample from a smaller population that represents the entire population. Phone polls don’t include people a) without phones b) who ignore unknown calls c) who decline to reply to poll calls and d) who lie to poll calls (at least not accurately). I know I’ve been tempted to lie when someone reaches out on behalf of a politician I don’t like, though usually I just ignore the texts.

      Exit polls can be similarly affected, though the dynamics are a bit different.

    Given the explanation that says “you included”, I’m guessing that the original joke was both the people said, “I’m not gay”, and then they look at you, the reader, making you the one out of three people who is gay.

    It’s basically the same joke I heard a comedian tell about San Francisco in probably the 1980s. “Look to your left. Look to your right. If they’re not gay, you are.” I’m guessing the joke is way older than that, though. It doesn’t work today because the majority of us all finally agreed that “You’re gay” isn’t an insult.

      Man, I hate these stupid jokes. Every time someone goes “statistically, one in three people is X, now look at the person to your left and right”, I want to scream “HAHAHAHAHAHAH SO FUNNY THAT’S STATISTICS FOR YOU AMIRITE” with an absolutely straight face. Bad enough they don’t know how statistics work, but they’re perpetuating other people’s ignorance on top of that.

        The unfunnyness and homophobia of the joke aside, this kind of joke doesn’t expect people to actually believe that statistics work this way. Part of the joke is the ridiculousness of expecting statistics to work that way. While there may indeed be some people so stupid/ignorant that they DO expect statistics to work this way, that’s not really the way this kind of humor is meant to work.
