The Marines Corps has launched an investigation after the California Highway Patrol said shrapnel from an artillery shell, fired during a live-fire demonstration touted by the White House, struck a law enforcement vehicle.

No injuries were reported when an artillery round “detonated overhead prematurely” during Saturday’s 250th anniversary celebration for the Marines Corps at Camp Pendleton, the highway patrol said.

But at least one of its patrol vehicles, on hand to help stop and divert traffic on Interstate 5 through the base during the demonstration, was damaged, the highway patrol said in a statement Sunday.

    Jesus…

trump appointed SC judges just said not even they can stop trump from doing anything last week…

    And you…

You really think the only way to accomplish shit is thru the legal system?

Just, since when did you think Cali cops are concerned about the legality of their issues?

If an ICE agent has a gun to your head, screaming he’s going to execute you, would you be ok with cops showing, seeing it’s a fed, and then saying:

Welp, feds outrank cops, nothing we can do here…

Or would you want them to arrest the ICE agent with a fucking gun to your head. And then worry about the legal ramifications later when you don’t have a crazy person holding a gun to your head?

Like, come the fuck on, does none of this make the teenyist but if sense to you?

I can assure you that cops can arrest military members…

And that since US military isn’t supposed to act on US soil, yes, cops can go onto a military base to stop them from firing live artillery rounds into civilian populated areas.

But even if it wasn’t ok, you do it to keep your citizens safe, then fight the fallout in courts.

How fucking bad is Civics in highschool these days? I’m getting the feeling from this thread that it hasn’t even existed for a decade.

          1. Cops don’t stand much of a chance against actual US Marines.
          2. Most cops are probably all for this show of force, it’s kinda right up the pigs’ alley. So I doubt they’d be super enthusiastic about arresting those Marines, especially in a circumstance where it’s not super clear what law they’ve broken (I doubt most cops know anything about military law or laws governing the military, since they likely haven’t taken any civics classes since flunking out of high school).
          3. Heaven forbid cops go in there, things get violent, and Trump uses that as an excuse to retaliate or invoke the Insurrection Act. He’s already on a hair trigger, something like that would almost certainly send him and his base over the edge.
          4. They did take action to keep their citizens safe, by closing down the roads near the base and diverting traffic away from potential danger.

Look, I’d love nothing more than for a bunch of bad ass good guys to go in there and slap cuffs on anyone involved in this little “celebration”. Unfortunately we live in reality and not an MCU movie though, so they had to do the next best thing.

Fucking insane everyone thinks the only way cops could have stopped this is by shooting guns…

Do you think there’s zero risk of shots being fired if a bunch of police show up on a Marine base and start slapping cuffs on soldiers?

That entire hypothetical scenario is basically how it would go down, yes. Cops are not on your side any more than ICE is. Although, recent actions by ICE have certainly pushed more cops off of their side, which is a plus.

                Oh really?

Well, congrats for taking such a vested interest in American military and law enforcement that you feel comfortable walking into a comment thread and telling a bunch of Americans how complicated interactions between the two groups work.

Super helpful mate, really appreciate it.

How is direct experience being " a self centered prick"?

If someone said race car drivers don’t have to obey the speed limit on the highway. And someone who used to race shows up and clarifies they still had to follow the law…

Would you get mad and insult them for having direct experience and sharing their knowledge?
