I don’t think so. People cared about game of thrones. Stranger things was a one season show for me.
I’ve never seen Stranger Things but I’m still surprised (and baffled) that Netflix is still milking an IP that debut in my junior year of high school. If even I do get around to watching it, I’ll probably not be that thrilled about it since I’ve seen and read enough “teen drama but weird” media.
Same, season 1 was really good and it ended there.
Few years back in one game I heard a phrase “Overstay your welcome”.
This show has overstayed it’s welcome for a long time. Same as many other shows. 3 seasons - that was enough.
Also waiting almost a fucking decade in between last season and this one isn’t great for building good faith around your brand.

There’s really no way they’re gonna get anything other than that reaction. The hype around it, while it has dwindled, always comes back pretty strong every season. They’ve also fallen into this formula of killing off exactly one (maybe two) characters every season. Not enough to make things feel like they have consequences but enough to pull at heartstrings.
The problem with mystery box type shows like this is that the journey is what’s fun, not the destination. The endings always seem to fall flat because they can go one of two ways. They can either provide an explanation that’s likely not satisfactory, or they can provide none which just feels really hollow. So by the time it ends you’re just like “well that was dumb,” but it wasn’t about that.
Will I watch it? Yeah, I’ve enjoyed it so far. I have memories of getting sucked into season 1 so badly that we skipped a day in the park to play Pokemon Go. But I’m emotionally preparing myself for a very lack luster ending. I just hope it’s cool, at least.
Similar comments came after season 3 and then season 4th dropped and it was super well received.
GoT did not implode because people were sick of it, it imploded because after a fairly great run, they phoned in the ending (which is the opposite you are supposed to do in general)
This show has had long pauses which do kind of suck but I just recently rewatched it with my kids (no old enough to catch up) and they loved it all… as long as they: 1) respect their own lore and 2) keep at least the same level of effort/quality; this show could end on a nice high note
I think you’re misunderstanding my point. The final season is different because it’s the end. If season 4 was the last season and it did well then what you said would be a good counter argument. The point I’m making is that a lot of the enjoyment is seeing new mysteries and how deep things go. Not cliff hangers so to speak, but more things to keep you curious. You can’t end the final season with a new mystery without making people upset, and I don’t think there will really be any satisfying answers to the current ones.
Not sure what you are talking about… while the “overall” mystery of the “upside down” has not been fully explained yet (which makes sense as the series is not over) they have done a great job balancing the “close this door, open the next” strategy.
Every season had it’s own core mystery that gets almost fully resolved… next season brings a new step in the chain and overall they have made it clear there is an escalation.
You seem to imply every season ends in a cliffhanger which I completely disagree with.
Side note, there are bad cliffhangers and good cliffhangers… i.e. Inception IMO was a good cliffhanger, you don’t know if DiCaprio is dreaming or not but that is not really the important part, his journey ended one way or another, you get to decide if he “succeeded” the way you think “success” looks like… Leaving the main plot without an answer, that is a bad cliffhanger
It’s very possible to make a mystery box concept satisfying, you write the mystery before you start making the show and you don’t let it extend wildly beyond the scope unless you create a new mystery that doesn’t retcon the original one. A certain asshole made writing mystery boxes without worrying about how it was going to be resolved a huge thing and created a bunch of wildly successful but deeply unsatisfying shows and now for some reason producers think it’s okay to write mysteries with no plan.
If you get a “GoT backlash”, it’s because you delivered GoT final season quality. It’s not hard to avoid that.

GoT was “torn to shreds” because it rushed the story, butchered the characters and the lore, put all the dumb memes on screen, and did so in 6 episodes that we had to wait a whole year for (back then we had a new season every year). And I blame GRRM as much as D&D. If he had written the books on time, D&D would have had more concrete material (they could have adapted The Vale and Lady Stoneheart, but I’m being generous).
The last season was pretty naff, it never really picked back up after the first one. In the first season it was a few small town people just trying to find a missing boy, now they’re trying to save the world or some shit. These shows always feel that they have to increase the stakes and everything else just suffers.

No one is that invested in Stranger Things. It is pretty obviously a soulless Netflix cash cow at this stage, people watch it for light entertainment and don’t dwell on its quality.

There is no original version of the story being developed independent of the TV series. Fans can’t get up in arms about it “not being the true ending” like they did with Game of Thrones.

Scene: A stranger thing is charging out of a portal at the group.
One of them looks directly at the camera addressing the viewers and raises one eyebrow “Oh here we go again” as they smash the creature in the head with some piece of 80s nostalgia, like a commodore 64 keyboard or some shit.
The scene pauses mid-impact as the keyboard keys fly off spelling out “OUCH”. Than a monologue starts, but in the creatures voice. “You might be wondering how I got here, well that’s a STRANGE story, haha…”

It feels like every second show does this now. They have to show immediate proof that the show will “get to the good bit” eventually because modern audiences have the attention span of a gnat.
Not gunna lie, that would be funny as fuck. I mean it wouldn’t save the show from the dumpster fire it has become but at least it would be a small moment of joy.
The backlash for this show is come and gone. They lost me after season 2 and now the kids look 30.

It is worth the watch. Season will make you wana quit, and Season 3 is a slow start but twoards end of 3 and most of 4 it is great. Season 4 ending is amazing
I thought season 4 was actually decent enough. At least better than the two seasons that preceded it.
But I’ll say the same thing that I said back when season 2 was announced: it should’ve been an anthology series. Introduce a new cast and new location each season. Keep the 80’s, keep the general pretense of the upside-down even, but change it up each time to keep it from getting stale.
The fourth season is the second best of the lot (the first one obviously being the best).

I mean a good season is still a good season. If season 5 turns out to be terrible, you can just say that the series ends at season 4.
Yes, there is a setup of future seasons after season 4, but it’s not like Game of Thrones where it’s been setup with tons of mystery for multiple seasons. It’s a new bad guy last season, he was technically sorta involved with the previous seasons. They good guys will win and some characters will sacrifice themselves. There isn’t a big mystery.
Plus, it’s infuriating to come into these threads and see so many comments of people saying they haven’t watched the show in 2-3 seasons. Great. Your opinion means nothing. You can’t have a reasonable opinion about season 5 if you haven’t seen the seasons before it.
