One of the reasons I switched to Piefed was having a built in filter list. I still keep up to date with the news somewhat but I don’t need to know hour to hour updates on every issue. Also the news is so USA centric, when you don’t live there it’s not very useful.

I also have democrat on my list, but I’m just generally pretty dang tired of the english-speaking internet being dominated by US politics. We get it, it’s a hellscape. The rest of us can’t really help though ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Sorry I thought it was common knowledge that the US is the only country to drop nukes on actual human people. My mistake for giving people the benefit of the doubt on how much they know about significant world events. It was foolish of me to make that assumption in the current reality.

Man, every time someone goes “I want to keep my news separate from my social media feed” you folks jump at the chance to be self righteous.
If Lemmy (or any social media) is your main source of news, or the sole way you keep up with politics, that’s a problem.
If you think that constant exposure to an inconsistent firehose of news even more effected by personal biases than normal is some sort of virtue, then you don’t have much media literacy, or any awareness of the many studies that show just how much this shit has negative effects on worldview and emotional state. Before you start in on “but the world is shit”, more than one of these studies specifically tracked differences between what people thought crime rates were vs what they actually were, based off news exposure. The result was that all the people in the study exposed to news media thought things were a significant order of magnitude worse than the real statistics.
It’s not a sin to curate your own exposure to the news media apparatus, or to control your exposure so it happens on your own terms. It is literally all designed to provoke strong emotional reactions in order to increase page views and therefore ad impressions.
Avoiding news entirely is a problem too, but this constant attacking of anyone who dares to publicly talk about curating their news media diet, and especially trying to lay the blame for current mess in the USA on them, is some bullshit of the highest fucking degree.

Like, fuck dude. The world sucks. When I’m not busy voting 99.999999999% of the year I just want to look at funny pictures of cats.
This isn’t voter apathy. It’s actually overwhelming how much of c/all is this shit. The same 15 posts of the day repeated multiple times in different communities. It’s mostly sensationalized editorials too and some of the more important news stories are completely missed. Even with these filters there’s a ton of memes referencing these things, so you’ll still have a sense of what’s going on anyway.

i got a bunch of filters but then so.eone comes up with a new name for a filtered person and they still get through. or, theyre in the thumbnail but not in the title. i keep adding to it though. it’ll never be perfect, but every word i add to the list adds to my wellbeing.
Probably worth to block that person then. Look for pointers of troll accounts.
- New, a few weeks or less, for example.
- Suddenly changed tone of comments (may have been hacked)
- Writes emotionally fueled posts/comments, especially ragebait; the posts support persecution or question vulnerable groups needing support, and so on.
- Upvotes ragebait.
- Check for specific terms or phrases that seem copypasted.
- Check their mod log
na i mean someone calls trump, mr orange or something. he gets new nicknames everyday, its hard to keep adding them to the list.
Offtopic, but I really love that we can check someone’s voting history now. Reddit made it a lot less transparent.
I think my “politics” filter list on Mastodon is at 250 words by now, with additional lists for “AI Slop”, “Corposcum” and “Mental Wellbeing”.
Might seem too much, but I’ll definitely never get out of depression if I constantly see stuff going to shit. If something really bad is going on I see that through memes anyway.
