I don’t like that it’s closed doors, but I question the framing of this article.

Like clearly Canada needs to keep negotiations with the USA open and Carney is not in control of who Trump authorizes to speak for the USA.

They need time. Canada IS setting up trade with other nations. It’s not going to happen overnight…

Our exports dropped 19% in Q2 this year. Diversifying 1/5th of our trade will take long enough that the responsible thing to do is salvage what trade we can from the USA in the interim.

There’s a world of difference between buyCanadian and wefuckingneedourexportsguys.

“Keep your friends close, and your enemies closer”. Carney has a long and distinguished career in finance and politics. He is in complete control with whom he meets. Carney is buying time and setting up alternate trade outside of USSA. This takes time.

He’s in complete control of who he meets, but the way the article headline is framing it is irresponsible IMO.

As you said, Carney is setting up alternative trade partners. I’d assume part of his diversification strategy is to identify what aspects of trade specifically we need to divert away from the US due to Trump.

Can you elaborate on the “authorize” portion? This is all that’s in the article regarding why the person is speaking at the event.

Roberts is speaking to Carney’s cabinet during a session dubbed “establishing a new economic and security relationship with the U.S.” They will also hear from Kevin Rudd, Australia’s ambassador to the U.S., during the session.

The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) said Roberts is speaking to cabinet about trade issues because he knows the Trump administration’s playbook.
