Man, I thought we reached bottom with Olaf Scholz, now Merz and 2027 von der Leyen? Can we please get at least some semblance of progressive left politics back?

    I hate her so much.

But for the greater good i would happily take the L to have her as “my” Bundespräsidentin. Even though all i want is that she rots in hell. But atleast she would have less opportunities to fuck over all the people of europe in that rather representative role on a national level. She doesnt deserve it one bit. But getting her out of the EU is good thing.

That’s really decent of you. I wish more people had a selfless attitude like that.

Also, while we’re at it, apologies for some of our (Ireland) awful politicians in the EU too.

Short reminder that the German president is not comparable to the usual role of a president in other countries, e.g. the U.S.
It is by far not so powerful and has (apart from some key functions during the legislative process) mainly representative tasks.

She was already “deported” to the EU commission, so she could do less damage in Germany. Here we are now.

She has a talent of making the worst out of an office. Although the current President Steinmeier already is a disgrace for the office, spewing Racism and shaking hands with internationally wanted war criminals.

I think the bigger news is that if it happens she’s going to step down as President of the European Commission.

I had to check and it seems you are right. Next vote of EU Commission president would normally be in 2029, so she would have to go two years early.

Nah, thanks to Ai and Afd manipulations we will get some young & good looking Russian immigrant.

Leyen comes back as defense minister like before (when we didn’t need one).

The German Federal President is elected by parliament + some representatives from each regional council, so I don’t think that’s a threat for now but it certainly will in the next popular vote.

I thought she was not popular in Germany…But might be forwarded as a candidate for Presidency by the CDU, it seems.

I thought she was not popular in Germany…

That’s never a problem. The brain-dead and the senile combine to a massive majority and both are changing their opinion instantly once the right propagandists tell them how to think.

Also the president isn’t elected by the population. So it’s even cheaper as politicians don’t need to be brain-washed, they can simply be bought.

Unfortunately, this is not uniquelly a German situation. I find it a miracle we still have (some sort of) a Government at all in our divided countries.

She isn’t, but the president isn’t elected by popular vote but from parliament.

        parliament

Tnx, so the Bundestag elects her. Is she popular there as far as you know?

I used translation option to read the article. Don’t know how the original reads, but translations was bad or it reads sensationally weird to me. Anyhow it sounded all like gossip, is this correct?

          so the Bundestag elects her

Yes and no. The president is elected by the Bundesversammlung (federal convention) which exists and meets solely for this task. It consists of all members of the Bundestag, the federal pairlament, and an equal number of designees from the states pairlaments who are elected by the pairlaments in advance of the presidential election. The individual share of the latter depends on the population of the state.

Well, Bundestag is dominated by the CDU and she is a CDU member. So… 🤷‍♂️

And yes, the article is written more like a casual political comment and the German original also is a bit awkward, so your impression is right.

The Bundestag is anything but dominated by the CDU, they wish. Whoever tries to be the next president, needs some serious inter-psrty diplomacy and good will, and the CDU is not known for being good at that. Certainly the current is far from that

Meh, SPD will hold its tummy and do the CDUs bidding like they got so used to in the last 20 years. That alone should be enough for ~40%, add an actual left candidate as alternative and the NSAfD is also on board
