I interpreted it as “We see ourselves working toward a self that we’ve already achieved.”
or everyone sees themselves as a work in progress.

Body image, lots of us see ourselves as having too much wait
We all curse because we think this isn’t even our final form.
I can’t speak for the artist here, but I think it’s safe to say they are depicting a difference of perception of ones self and reality. Could mean that we are looking to improve ourselves, when we are already fine and should just be who we are.
