Back in 2009 I was working nightshift onboard a ship in Nigerian waters. I was stuck where I was, operating the machinery, so I radioed in if someone could please bring me a coffee, because I was sure I just saw a flying dog.
“Oh, those are fruit bats, you’ll see more of them” they replied from inside, knowing exactly what I was talking about without needing more details.
And yes, I did see more of them over time; they liked hanging from the back deck work crane when it was not in use. Awesome creatures, and pretty large too.
Aussie fruit bats (or flying foxes) are huge. I’ve almost walked into one at night while it was hanging from a tree and monching on the flowers. It was just as startled as me, and when those wings unfurled it just about blocked the path.
Is the y-axis supposed to be the sound they make? I’ve never encountered those words before.

It took me a while to realize that one on the right is a bat and not a bear
People are afraid of a true spectrum so instead the world is divided up into just 4 buckets.
It’s a graph. Literally two spectrums overlaid onto each other.
Also these divide into nine buckets (or 16, 25, etc). They might not been the sharpest spoon in the shed.
