I have this problem when people use abreviations for game names. There are so many games that it’s impossible for me to understand. And good luck to find out which game it is if it’s a new one you never heard of…

It can sometimes work if there are more than one character involved TES:III, F:NV, EU4, CK2, VIC2, HOI4, and CoC are all good examples. Also yes I did use a bunch of paradox games but only the ones I have more than a thousand hours in.

Really? I never would have thought Captain Planet would take up that much space on a hard drive. Are you storing fucking Captain Planet as a 4k video? It was a cartoon from the early 90s. I think 480p would be more than enough! Sure there were 114 episodes, but they weren’t that long. How much space can the complete Captain Planet really take up?

          32.7 gb at 480 ;)

But it includes the srt files. Get rid of those and it’s probably closer to 32 even.

(I know this was a joke, but it is still pretty big 😉)

Acronyms are a pet peeve of mine. Basically useless and now you need tribal knowledge to understand what the hell someone is talking about.

That’s true, but it’s also true that within a small community sometimes acronyms are necessary. Like, imagine NASA:

“Jones exited the AL in his AES but the C4ISP flagged an error either in the LSPG or WFCA.”

        vs.

“Jones exited the air lock in his Anthropometric Extra Vehicular Activity Suit but the Command, Control, Communications, Computers and Information Systems Protection system flagged an error in the Life Support Power Generation System or Water Flow Control Assembly”

Insiders can use the acronyms to be much more efficient. Outsiders probably wouldn’t even understand what they’re talking about even if they did spell things out fully.

The only problem is when acronyms leak and what’s a well known and clear acronym in one group becomes a confusing one to another group, or worse is confused for a different acronym from a different group.

If the intended reader is a regular person just use normal words, even if it’s not 100 % accurate.

Jones exited the air lock in his space suit but the control system flagged an error with life support or water flow

All three ways don’t mean much to me as an outsider, but the last one at least paints a somewhat understandable picture.

Somehow, 10% of the acronyms reduce to “TLA”. Including the very nice self-explanatory “three letter acronym”.

Assassins Creed, God of War, No idea, Path of Exile or Pillars of Eternity, Dark Souls.

Damn I would’ve said Animal Crossing for the first one, but I’ve never played an Assassin’s Creed game so there’s that. Also CS makes me think of Counterstrike.

I only played about 20-30 minutes of Assassins Creed myself, but you hear the name all the time. I was actually going to put Counterstrike for CS but skipped it somehow.

I’d’ve thought EA is just an abbreviation for Electronic Arts.

Back in the day, a couple of people I knew abbreviated it as EOA to more closely match their original logo.

And they’re usually such worthless abbreviations and acronyms that save next to no time. Unless you’ve already defined your acronym or someone mentioned it immediately before you, you’re just confusing a smattering of people.

I was talking with some friends about Dune stuff (after the recent game came out) and was mentioning stuff in the books. I had used the name before, but I type CoD once and they were confused why I was talking about Call of Duty, but it was Children of Dune.
