The opposite of being woke is being asleep and oblivious to what’s going on. It’s crazy people say they aren’t woke and think that’s like a good thing lol.

It’s like saying “I’m a fucking idiot” and being smug about it

To be fair, “woke” as it’s widely known today originated as basically the left-wing counterpart to “redpilled”, with both just being two different words used by different groups of people to favorably describe themselves as ‘enlightened/privy to the real truth that most others aren’t’. It’s “woke” as in alert and aware of the truth, and “redpilled” similarly to how it is in the Matrix—becoming aware of the actual reality of things, taking the blinders off. Fundamentally, describing the exact same state of being.

So, I’m going to go out on a limb and guess that if you read someone having written:

The opposite of being redpilled is being oblivious to what’s going on. It’s crazy people say they aren’t redpilled and think that’s like a good thing lol. It’s like saying “I’m a fucking idiot” and being smug about it

You wouldn’t agree with them, even though the above is the exact same sentiment—the only difference is in what the content of said ‘higher truth’ that one who’s woke/redpilled has become ‘enlightened’ to, is.

It’s the exact same reason the demographic of people who are against abortion in the US don’t call themselves “anti-abortion”, but “pro-life”. Like the above, it’s a PR move. Would you accept a ‘pro-lifer’ telling you you’re “anti-life” if you oppose their view? That’s the kind of rhetorical maneuver you’re employing in your comment.

My point is, the self-labeled descriptor is not important, and all sides will obviously use a descriptor that sounds good and makes them sound favorable to describe themselves, so focusing on it is pointless, and just comes off as arrogance. Focus instead on the actual things that “woke” represents—it hits much harder imo to read something like, for example, “it’s crazy people say they’re against healthcare being a human right and think that’s like a good thing lol”, than what I quoted above.

a few problems with this comment:

        1. woke is net a left wing counterpart to “redpilled” it’s a term at least 160 years old
        2. anyone who claims to be woke is instantly not woke. you have to earn being called woke by an oppressed person. you can claim to be conscious to aspects of this system of oppression, but you cannot claim to be woke or conscious without instantly demonstrating yourself to be a performative ally
        3. your issue is not with whether or not being woke is good, your issue is with whether or not claiming to be woke is good, in which case, see point 2
        4. conservatives use redpilled wrong just like they use woke wrong. they just generally use any terms of consciousness wrong because fascism is a scam that promises progressive benefits through status quo, an obvious logical fallacy

your issue isn’t with “woke” your issue is with how conservatives use the word woke, literally the point of the OP

It isn’t an insult. I don’t feel insulted by being called woke. I distribute a lot of harm reduction supplies and I get a lot of eye rolling, hard exhaling, shouldn’t they just take responsibility for themselvesing, I had hard times in my life tooing, etc. I am woke. Fuck you gonna do about it? Nazi wimps.

I feel insulted it is used in the name of bills designed to inhibit help to people in crisis. But I am (maybe) accidentally in a job that wasn’t meant to exist? I don’t seem to report to anybody? So I am going to do whatever I want until they fire me. And what I want to do is harm reduction and crisis intervention.

Edit: and since the Internet has maybe provided me with a soapbox, I will continue. You can seek help even if you aren’t homeless. It is better you do before that is even a possibility. If you feel substance use is diminishing your enjoyment of life, come for help.

I do understand hesitation. In some places, this costs money. Even in places these services are free, you feel shame. People are judging you. And — to be honest — a lot of healthcare providers are also judgemental. And I am currently in a small town of fewer than 2000 people. Your private business is maybe going to be everyone’s entertainment. Be strong. Once you do get into the mental health and substance use pipeline, we are mostly good and we are mostly there because we have big hearts yearning to help.

A lot of the reason I have opted to spend much of my time in the community is to overcome those barriers to access to help. Come say “hi”. I will say “hi” too. Maybe that is the first step. Worst case scenario is we were friendly to each other. Gross!

And if you are one of those skeptics who have said I am enabling substance users and let me know that opinion— even angrily — water under the bridge; you are not the first person experiencing substance related symptoms; we got you. Don’t let embarrassment stop you, please. Come back for help whenever you like. Seriously, I’m happy to help. I look forward to meeting you (again). And — if you don’t live near me — someone in your area is too.

I’m sure someone is somewhere grappling with that.

Since the politicians they support and voted in are actively dismantling the government, erecting a dictatorship, and enacting policies guaranteed to get people needlessly killed I don’t find myself burdened by such concerns.

The point isn’t to take sides with the sheep, it’s about self-awareness. Recognizing that hating ignorant people is just a different form of ignorance. We’re all burdened by or own ignorance even if we don’t know it.

I don’t hate them for their ignorance. I would actually stop short of saying I hate them at all. But the deep disdain I feel for them is for the hellscape they have dragged all of us into, and which will take decades to fix, if we fix it at all.

So yeah, I’m probably burdened by being ignorant of how that makes me just as bad as they are.

Considering I’ll die of old age still being harmed by what they have empowered and are currently cheering for, and will also die knowing my kids’ lives and the lives of everyone I care about will be worse because of it, I’m ok with that.

During the holocaust there were millions of Germans who were completely indifferent to the killing of the Jews. They were likely unconsciously ignoring the horrible shit that was happening and didn’t want to face reality because if they did acknowledge it they would be implicated or be shunned by their in group. Notice how their main concern was selfish in nature. This is how I see the landscape of modern day conservatism. There is little to no pushback from other conservatives against the horrible shit people are saying and doing.

So you can argue all you want whether or not the wilfully ignorant are nazis or not I don’t really care. And I am not surprised it’s meaningless to those who are indifferent. They have already chosen to ignore the horrible shit some conservatives are saying, why would they care what anyone else says.

            • I would say the mass outcry from conservatives at trump not releasing the Epstein files is the exact push back u refer to.

And this is why the left keep losing. The right are not ignorant of the shit the more extreme than themselves are doing they let it be because for the moment their goals are aligned. The left is too busy fighting with others on the left over what flavour of left they are and to what extent that they are. They end up completely sabotaging themselves fighting to be right instead of to win.

Then of cause u need to remember the only law that exists is violence and he who wields it wins. The conservatives have won the young men and the left are apathetic to their struggle. The left does not realise the threat they have created.

You have just proved my point. Conservatives will rather “win” than call each subgroup out on their disgusting behaviour. This isn’t a motley crew, it’s “decent” people mixed in with hateful dangerously ignorant people and there is an indifference that will bring in a new era that will be shameful if humans get beyond it.

I feel like there’s a pretty big set of center-to-left people for whom the positive notion of wokeness is spoiled by particularly egregious behaviour of, say, “woke Twitter.” (for instance, I suspect many are eager to move on from “mansplain.” And let’s not forget people bullying Lindsay Ellis for comparing Raya and the Last Dragon to Avatar; that was fucked up.)

If we can deftly arrange for “woke” to redirect to that kind of peripheral stuff, and extract the important stuff – protections for minorities, diversity and inclusion, etc. – under some new label, then yeah I’m content to leave “woke” in the past.
