Ahoi there. Before we take a dive into music I really dig, I probably should say a few words here. I grew up listening to music nonstop. I smuggled myself backstage to an industrial metal band at the age of 13 - about a hundred miles away from home (that’s a fun story for another time… ^^). My musical background goes like this:
Joined my first band at the age of 15 (I’m 38 now), learnt everything about electronic music from my bandmate including programming, playing keyboard / synths, first huge live gig at the age of 17 being the support band at a sold out concert of another band. I kept doing that for a couple of years until my hearing went to shit after playing a concert (of course I did not wear ear protection, because I was feeling young and invincible, who needs that stuff anyway? Old people?)…
I regained some of my hearing over time, but it’s still not great. I kept listening to boatloads of music everyday since, went to live gigs whenever I could. I started drumming not too long ago because I can still vibe to it and understand it. The nuances of electronic music? Long gone and in the shitter. But beating stuff with sticks? Hell yes.
I wanted to comment in the other thread about trans musicians more, but I only know 2 other unknown bands from London with trans people playing, and for the life of me, I do not remember the bands’ names… Mea culpa!
So, let’s get started on cis ladies being awesome as fuck doing music, shall we?
First: Singers / songwriters
K.Flay - Blood in the cut (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k2WcOdz96ko) She gives me the chills! Every now and then she jams with Grandson (Peaches is amazing, but check out the good lad Grandson as well, he’s such an awesome dude and deserves more credit).
Archive - Hatchet (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lnwABVxcl3s) This lass can SING! The lyrics are gut wrenching.
Fever Ray - If I had a heart (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EBAzlNJonO8) Swedish artist, her song was used for the intro of the tele show Vikings.
Now - and this makes me giggle since I’m a drummer these days:
Jess Bowen (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gSX7D-dJRBo) A pop drummer, doesn’t know Rage against the machine, fucking nails it on the first take.
Domino Santantonio (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WeuskcJyoBQ) Another pop drummer, doesn’t own a double kick pedal, fucking kills Slipknot anyway.
I hope you enjoy that quick list of awesome ladies doing music. There are so many more, but these were the ones coming to mind in a 2 minutes brainstorming process.
Have an amazing day, y’all! :)
Recently Ive been leaning towards jazz and swing.
Love Brandee Younger, an amazing jazz harpist. Haven’t heard harp in jazz before? Check it out https://m.youtube.com/@ladieharp
I can’t get enough of Hannah Gill’s soft velvety voice https://m.youtube.com/@HannahGillMusic
Oh and I heard Think in John Wick and instantly became a fan of Kaleida https://m.youtube.com/@kaleidamusik
Holy shit!! I honestly teared up listening to Hatchet it’s such a powerful song. I really like K.flay as well, the song gripped me throughout. How have I never heard of them?
I’m not even a drummer and I was amazed by Jess and Domino.
They are soooo gooood! The drummers - I have to say that, of course, but Holly Martin, one of the singers of Archive? FUUUCK!!! :D
Really are! Do you mind if I share your post in [email protected] it’s an alt forum
I can’t access that instance, probably because my instance defederated from them, and I trust them there’s a good reason why. Please do not, in that case.
But if you want to hear another great song by Holly - here you go:

I won’t include the lyrics here because they might trigger.
But yeah, let’s say I’m a survivor and for the past 3 years I am not leaving my house unarmed.
I totally respect your decision and won’t share it. Listening to that song now I really like the energy of it. Well done for surviving… I went shooting in America a few years ago, if I lived there I’d 100% get a firearm.
I am very thankful for living in a firearms weapons free Europe.
Yep, nobody needs to have one here! Odd farmer but that’s it
EDIT: How the fuck did I forget to include THE MOST IMPORTANT woman in drumming history??? Shame on me!
Dorothea Taylor (she’s been a badass teacher for decades) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6wkCsnFRuwg
EDIT 2: This always warms my heart - she can play Travis fucking Barker againt the wall if she wants to. Lol. :D https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WTu09li_4Fo
I’m a 90s alt girl so I’ve just added that to my Spotify list thanks
Is it okay if we add any we enjoy and if so, how ‘famous’ do they have to be? Can it only be individuals or women in a band?
Go for it Spez is a music nerd so will love to hear your input
Absolutely!
EDIT: I am totally not Spez :D
Ah sorry mate I thought you were Spez but you’re totally not
:D
Add anyone you please, for heaven’s sake, I’m not famous at all, I kept my name out of every band I ever played with just so people can’t stalk me online (and I mean you, HR and recruiters!). I always played under a fake made up name when releasing anything officially. ^^
Thanks for letting us know and good way to maintain privacy, we’re impressed!
As always, you’re welcome =)
I’ve been obsessed with Maria Brink from In This Moment for a long time. Whilst not their typical style, The Fighter gives me chills.
Sweet, listening in soon after feeding my silly dog. _ Thank you!
I have an input here! Emily Jeffri is an lgbt artist, really unique style. I also love melancholic crossroads both totally unknown
