Amid ongoing scrutiny of President Donald Trump and his administration’s handling of the Jeffrey Epstein child sex trafficking case, newly unearthed video shows Trump taking part as a judge in a beauty pageant that featured models as young as 14 years old.

The video in question shows Trump as one of 10 judges in Elite Model Agency’s 1991 “Look of the Year” competition. Within the video, young women and girls walk in front of Trump and others in order to be judged on both their looks and “personality,” according to the narrator.

I never understood why the man’s age is important? Are we expected to be more forgiving of older pedos than younger ones? If he’s 18, 25, 35, non of those make it right. 14y is 14y end of story.

ETA: not sure where the downvotes are coming from, it looks like people think the age gap is more important than the fact that the girl is a minor. Or people think that I’m condoning this behaviour? Either way, I’m saying Pedo is pedo, doesn’t matter if the man is 18 or 88. And I’m saying man not boy. Different jurisdictions have different rules on how minors can interact with each other, this is not about that.

Also, I think is it’s telling for our patriarchy that the male age is seen as a factor. I would have hoped that by now we would see it more (or at least also) from the victim’s perspective.

One of my first truly disappointing days on Lemmy. I’ll just stay here to get the orange out, and then I’m out too.

It matters because, generally and from my own experience, you should find someone that much younger than you will stop looking like an attractive mate and will start looking too young to you.

I’m 41 and people 25 and under all look “young” to me now. To the point where they don’t cross my radar as potential mates.

Severity? Like, it’s worse the older you are.

If you’re 19, I’d be like “hey lil bro, you’re not in hs anymore. Chill.”

You’re 45? Public shaming and you should be kept as far away from children as possible, not given the keys to the fucking country.

I don’t get this logic. From the girl’s perspective both are abhorrent, and I can’t believe people upvote that “not in hs anymore”. I may be from a different cultural background. If it is my 14y daughter, I don’t give a fck if you’re 18 y old and 1 day.

It would be good to see it from the victims perspective not just the dude.

LOL. To add to what I said earlier, 7 European countries peg age of consent at 14. To my American mind, pretty gross, but the belief that we gain sexuality and agency on our 18th birthday is weird.

From the girl’s perspective both are abhorrent

          Speaking of agency…

Man how did this descent into a whataboutism thread of age of consent? Nothing to do with my question.

That applies to what minors can consent to within frameworks. It never gives a minor the ability to allow for an adult to have sexual interaction with them.

In case you’re new to this: If a 14y old rocks up to you and says wanna fck, presuming you’re the adult, their consent doesn’t matter. it wouldn’t matter if you had written permission from their parent or if both of you had a medical prescription for it.

And it’s a lot healthier for kids at 14 to be able to give or withdraw consent to each other to have sexual experiences rather then it to be outlawed outright. This way they are invited to explore how the law actually can help and protect them, they learn and can teach each other about consent, and it normalises sex so outside adult predators will be less successful at grooming them.

No law is suggesting that we only gain sexual agency at 18.

I think this entire thread is a mishap of lost in translation and lost in culture and conflating concepts of rape, paedophilia and consent.

Not to future readers: mid 2025 the word paedophilia was still red underlined on Apple devices. Go figure.

You’re looking at this as a numbers game, approaching the question with pure logic. A 45yo has the social tools to manipulate that a 18yo does not. That’s the problem. We could also talk about power imbalances, be those money, status or profession.

Different jurisdictions have different rules on how minors can interact with each other

Do not look up “age on consent” laws for the US or Europe. You’ll lose your shit. Only 10 US states peg 18 as that age, and Turkey is the only state in Europe at 18.

Not really. Theres a power dynamic.

Your coworker telling you that you are bad at your job VS the CEO telling you that you’re bad at your job.

A person your age and build grabs your ass. Vs someone bigger, stronger than you grabs your ass.

Age is also a power move.

            I rephrase

The level of trauma is roughly equivalent no matter the age of the perpetrator. Each age bracket may provide different types of trauma, but I’m pretty sure if you ask victims if they would have preferred a different age of their abuser they would just want them dead all the same.

Not really. I’m close to the age he was then and the idea of judging like that is absolutely abhorrent to me. I am finding it hard to pick an age where it wouldn’t have been though so I see your point somewhat.

I don’t care who I care why. I was just wondering if I have walking into some pseudo pedo accepting community that thinks there should be a lighter sentence for an 18y old messing with a minor than a 35y old.

I think a bunch of people may not have English as their first language and I’ll go with that, as the alternative is too depressing.

Oh, so in your view (not judging, just trying to understand the mysterious downvotes) the age gap is more incriminating that the fact that he was (at whatever adult age) sexually preying on a minor?

It’s not a matter of more incriminating. Both of those aspects of the action are 100%, maximum incriminating. Robbing a convenience store is bad, doing so with a gun is worse and indicates more intent. It’s a bit like that.

Having a gun isn’t the problem. It’s not incriminating to have a gun. Robbing a store is never okay, but it’s made so much worse by the fact that you did it with a gun.

An 18-year-old oggling a 14-year-old is inappropriate and concerning but not unnatural or indicative of serious psychological issues.

Just a few months later and it becomes worrisome. Each additional year is more damning. I don’t think that’s an unusual perspective to take on the situation.

Ok, thanks, that’s the first proper explanation I’m seeing for this, but we’re all agreed that even if the 18 year old is ogling he should know better and really shouldn’t pursue.

Overall, with the trump epstein story and the amount of evidence already on the public record, I found it pointless to mention his age, as he was clearly a grown ass man when he made a bunch of these comments and actions. Some of them were with his minor daughter sitting right next to him.

There’s the law, and then there’s what’s age appropriate.

The older you get, the less you should have in common with a younger romantic partner. This is based on my own experiences and those of others.

There really is an age gap mentally. It hits you hard when you realize it.

Then you realize every older guy/gal going for someone much, much, younger, knows this. And that is going to creep you out one day to the max.

      At least, it should…

A 14 year old flirting with a 14 year old is fine. A 16 and 14 year old is probably fine. 18 and 14 is probably not, but maybe if they’re both in school together it’s okay. There was a sophomore-senior couple in my high school and they were about the same maturity. Beyond that it’s no good.
