I also don’t know how to make the charges to my credit card stop because other parts of the (since updated) website also return errors and the customer service number I called on the website couldn’t help either.
I recall that the “stop the steal” donations continued billing people who thought they made a one-time donation. Hahaha. Stupid MAGA idiots will get fleeced and thank Trump for the privilege. Rubes! You deserve to be conned. Enjoy uncancelable recurring fees while you pay your medical bills that used to be covered by Medicaid, fascists.
It’s because you gave crooks your credit card number.
Perfect timing for that ftc cancellation rule being killed off.
Since it seems like most of the comments are along the lines of “haha stupid maga idiot 😂😂😂”, I’d like to make it clear that 404 Media is actually a pretty left-leaning publication which appears to be reporting on trump mobile from the standpoint of “wow, let’s see how bad this actually is”. Their reporting is mostly tech-focused, so this is in their wheelhouse.
That said, if it were coming from any other source I’d be laughing my ass off.
Yes. As I was saying elsewhere, he’s a journalist reporting on tech which includes scams, so of course he did actually used a real card to test, otherwise he’d be speculating rather than investigating.
And we’d probably not be hearing about this.
Yes, 404 Media are not idiots. Trump fans are.
It’s not surprising, but amazing, that this isn’t just the original phone scam. It’s a scam buried in a another scam.
One more layer and it’s a scam turducken.
Time to sell a service that will cancel it for you.
idk, I feel like the phone and the mobile service operator could qualify as two different layers of scam.
Good thing the FTC got that Click to Cancel law passed… Oh wait.
“By checking this box, you authorize Trumpmobile[dot]com to charge your card on a recurring basis.” But provides no indication of what this charge might be. I certainly didn’t expect one.
Congratulations. You just signed up to give a billionaire a $64.70 monthly donation to his political campaign. Your only option is to cancel the card because there is no way in hell he well ever stop dipping into this well.
Edit to remove the link I accidentally included to trumpmobile. I apologize profusely for linking to such a site. I feel so dirty now…
Your only option is to cancel the card because there is no way in hell he well ever stop dipping into this well.
They’d likely rack up a bill into the thousands and then send it off to collections. Or send ICE after you. Ya know, normal government things.
The fun thing is that some CC companies will still honor the charge even if you cancel the card. I had this happen with Planet Fitness. I had to specifically request a stop payment.
Not to shill, but Privacy[dot]com is really good for this, it allows you to create a temporary proxy credit card number, with the option to set a spending limit, and cancel the card instantly.
I’ve jumped fully on the privacy train. I have like 100 different cards with different limits, each locked to a single merchant. It’s so good.
Should I drop a segue to Rocket Money ad at this point or am I suppose to wait for a bit more?
“Rocket Money: give us access to all your financial information, and we might help you cancel stuff!”
Can they help me cancel Rocket Money?
With Rocket Money, you can cancel Rocket Money. It’s that easy!
Lol I live in a country full of people who are enthusiastically marks…
I know why.
It’s because it’s a scam.
Chargeback, then let them know it’s a duplicate.
The credit card company will get really pissed if it continues and will eventually remove the companies ability to use their services.
I had to do this with Verizon.
We’ve already seen how willing companies are to stand up to Trump, even if he is in the wrong.
I’m totally sure T-Mobile or the Credit Card company would be willing to defend this in court…
It is hard to describe how powerful VISA is.
I might have missed something, what does T-Mobile have to do with this?
I’m pretty sure TACOmobile is using Tmo’s towers, sort of like how Mint Mobile does. There’s a term for it that I’m drawing a blank on, hopefully someone else knows and replies
Edit: I still don’t know why the commenter included T mobile, it’s definitely a broad shot against an otherwise mostly uninvolved party. TACOmobile is the one doing the billing as far as I know.
Edit part deux: Or it’s a superPAC or other donation collector taking the money right now maybe? Either way, not Tmo
I believe the term you are looking for is MVNO, Mobile Virtual Network Operator.
I mean, there are only two other companies with which to do that here so there’s a 1/3 chance it’s Tmo to begin with. But yeah, I’m still not sure what they would have to do with the credit card charges for Trump Mobile, as opposed to Mint, Tmo owns Mint.
That’s exactly the term (phrase, I guess) I was searching for, thank you. I also missed the news when Tmo bought Mint, so double thanks there.
One of the comments above said they were the parent carrier offering MVNO services to Trump Mobile.
This company will be long gone by the time that happens.
Its a fucking credit card, you can just file a goddamn charge back.
Sure, but you shouldn’t have to. Your response makes it sound like the person who appears to be getting money stolen from them is acting unreasonably when they are most certainly not the party acting that way.
It is wrong, but that’s the answer to stopping it.
I guess, but that’s not why this is news, is it?
I’m conflicted on this. On the one hand, I love the idea of a stupid tax. On the other, I hate the idea of Trump getting all the money the stupid tax generates.
I think it’s a follow up piece. The first one was I bought the Trump Mobile to open it and see what inside however they only charge me 64$ and still no phone. He should have cancel at this point
I’m taking notes…
You gave your card to a scammer. What do you expect.
He’s a journalist reporting on tech which includes scams, of course he did otherwise he’d be speculating rather than investigating.
And we’d probably not be hearing about this.
Thoughts and prayers you fucking cunt.Aight, I didn’t read the article and thought it was some MAGAt. It was a reporter acting as a guinea pig in order to educate people. Thanks to the commenter below for pointing that out.
This is a reporter that signed up for the preorder of the "Trump Phone"to see how shit it would be.
Homeboy is taking more heat for our benefit because the scam is a scam2
🤣🤣🤣

Because “grift” is why.
You got scammed, sweetheart.
It’s a journalist who ordered it for a review knowing it was going to be at least a couple scams involved…
Sweetheart
I’m conflicted about this because on one hand people deserve to know the truth from a primary source.
On the other hand, wouldn’t it be easier to interview the people who delivered Hitler’s lunch than it would be to buy Hitler lunch a couple of times a month?
Sure, but you’d have to find someone willing to talk about it. In fact you’d probably want to find at least 2-3 people who can all confirm the same story.
Plus if you can call it a scam right out of the gate (this article is a follow up to the original purchase article when the phone was first “released”) maybe you can limit the damage of the scam.
If you can spend $100 to rightfully call out a scam that would have made $1,000, is that a net win? That’s an honest question. I think so, but I understand that might not be the case.
The “IF” is doing some heavy lifting with the weighing of options.
At the very least use a disposable card they can’t keep charging.
I’m legitimately surprised a journalist didn’t use virtual credit cards. Knowing full well you’re giving credit card info to the world’s most famous grifter? I’d take every security measure available
