Trading partners around the world express anger including Mexico which buys more steel out of the US than it sends the other way

The US has doubled tariffs on foreign steel and aluminum imports to 50%, pressing ahead in the face of criticism from key trading partners with a measure that Donald Trump says is intended to revive the American industry.

About a quarter of all steel used in the US is imported and data shows the increased levies will hit the closest US trading partners – Canada and Mexico – especially hard. They rank first and third respectively in steel shipment volumes to the US.

Can’t revive the damn industry by waving a magic wand. Like steel mills and mines are just going to materialize because of some tariffs?

Steel is actually a good thing to tariff. China has been dumping a shit ton of steel on the global market and it hurts manufacturers in many other countries. In most countries these tariffs would be inacted because of antidumping rulings to protect the markets. They are common and quite fair. Then during the process it mostly changes towards a minimum price instead. (Like what European countries are doing regarding cheap EVs from China)

To tariff all steel instead of just the cheap steel is amazingly stupid tough. But that’s the amazing mind of Trump TM.

Maybe you should look towards eating something other than steel or aluminum. (but seriously sorry you’re having to deal with this)

Yup, I figure I have maybe 2 weeks at this price before we get laid off. Also, ironically it’d be cheaper if they built it in Mexico because it wouldn’t cross the border as much.

The Guardian fired their journalists and replaced them with AI. I’d like to raise this point and see if we could be more selective with News? I think That the co-opting of our news media is just about controlling the Overton window and I would hope we could find and support independent media like Al Jazeera. Who have 15.8m subscribers on youtube and whose videos went from getting 10s of millions of views to majority under 10k in the space of a year.

        Their propaganda pamphlet(aka prompt)

There’s been a push the last few days of the narrative that Al Jazeera is “independent media” that is being “suppressed”. And they keep bringing up the youtube numbers as some big gotcha.

What do you reckon the organization looks like and what is the size?

What follows is totally unsubstantiated and just my gut.

I feel like there is A/B testing of phrases and factoids that is then used on the wider web. Also wonder if a good chunk of it is training as some of the writing is painfully naive in regards to western life and world politics in general. I also wonder how many follower parrots there are that are just propagandized westerners.

The VAST majority isn’t structured or done from actual documentation or directly sent out from an organization. It’s sumbliminally dispersed through different media. And people unknowingly, but willingly, spread it thinking they thought of it themselves.

Yeah, I see things reported or comments on Lemmy that ping my radar. Used to see it on thedonald subreddit. That was painfully transparent at first, you could see the Russians clock in and go to work.

All of this sounds like crazy talk, certainly makes me feel paranoid. However, I don’t think most of us, myself included, understand the scale of the media manipulation that is occuring. I think it’s chaotic, state level actors and corporations. Lemmy having a single source for its manipulation is unusual but it is small and nerdy.
