People should start mirroring Reddit porn to the appropriate fedi hubs. Porn is how tech grows; hate it or love it.

As long as you have nsfw content enabled and your instance is federated with it (you’ll have to check since some instances do not federate with porn lemmys due to legal concerns). The list of federated and blocked instances for your instance is listed in the “Instances” link in the footer of your instance.

If you find that you are indeed federated with it, you can subscribe to its comms simply by finding them in the search feature on your own instance. They will then be visible on your homepage when you sort by “subscribed”.

On desktop, logged into whatever instance on which you have an account, select “All” (instead of local) on the main page. This will enable you to see all communities on all instances. Click the subscribe button on the right to subsribe to a community. Note that the community doesn’t have to live on your home server for you to subscribe. Federation makes it so that different instances can share information with each other. Not sureif theresyet a wayto do the above on any of the lemmy phone apps.

Edit: instance as in lemmy instance as in website. For example my home instance is reddthat.com.

I’ve heard it was a popular discussion place people would go to. Even called the front page of the internet because it was the first and best source for compiled news and information. Its CEO had some quotes that showed how important free flow of information was.

“I don’t think we should silence people just because their viewpoints are something we disagree with. There is value in the conversation, and we as a society need to confront these issues. This is an incredibly complex topic, and I’m sure our thinking will continue to evolve.”

“We are not the thought police. It’s not the role of a private company to decide what people can and cannot say.”

He was also forward thinking in designing an open forum, controlled by individuals.

“Our approach to governance is that communities can set appropriate standards around language for themselves. Many communities have rules around speech that are more restrictive than our own, and we fully support those rules.”

Wait, that sounds more like the Fediverse.

Not just porn! Since reddit only has one such tag you can apply to posts, many subreddits were using the NSFW tag for a wider variety of reasons such as spoilers, content which may contain unsettling material (aka “triggers”), and more!

Not sure on connect. But what I personally do, I’ve made 2 accounts, one on each. And put them on liftoff inside of a secure folder. That way, I don’t have to necessarily search for what I want. I can just pop on to them and see what jumps out at me.

Nevernind, I had connec ti stalled. If yiu want separate accounts. Just open the app, click at the top left and add the accounts there.

Porn may have been one factor, but the bad recording times on beta are what really killed it. Here is a series of four videos detailing the differences between beta and VHS. And there was plenty of porn available on the beta.

Technology Connections did a REALLY good series of videos on VHS vs Betamax a few years back (and it is fun, if only because it was before he felt comfortable being incredibly snarky on camera).

But the gist is: no. That is a myth. Betamax had porn too. The real reasons VHS won were that it had a better licensing agreement for third parties, the physical format made it easier to see if the rental was rewound (so you could charge if it wasn’t), and it allowed for higher capacity recordings (so sports).

If you have a way to monetize? Porn is nice. The rental shops with the cowboy doors in the back tended to do better than the ones that only had Air Bud 51516161616. But, increasingly, the business model of social media (and the internet as a whole) is built around ads and sponsors. And even the dick pills companies tend to not like advertising alongside straight up porn. And all the incels and puritans even make advertising next to “hot tub streams” risky (even if you can often see much more risque stuff on billboards along the interstate…).

And of the companies that decided “porn wins the internet”: Tumblr is a shadow of its former self once it got rid of all the good stuff. Snapchat and Instagram have always walked a VERY fine line with very strict moderation. And OnlyFans and PornHub are pretty much at the mercy of credit card companies even letting people spend money there.

Not sure the benefits to locking it behind an app (or clicking the desktop site button in firefox) but between this and the ongoing “protests”? I wouldn’t be surprised if porn is straight up off reddit within the next year.

The market is already pretty saturated, though. There are so many other places to view this type of content and in a better format than a link aggregator.

Like, wouldn’t Pornhub be a more streamlined way to look at porn? Or whatever other porn website?

I never understood the appeal of porn on reddit. I always just blocked the porn subs and went about my business.

Having said all that, I totally agree that it should be allowed or perhaps even encouraged. It’s a free and open system - let the people do what they want. Even if I personally don’t understand the appeal.

That’s true for most professional varieties of porn, but it’s amateur content direct from the makers that’s the unique niche. I’m sure there are plenty of other places that do that as well though. Personally I never cared about porn on reddit either.

People are pretty fond of the grassroots movement for independent creators to strike their own on reddit. Onlyfans is a good website for creators to monetize their content, but I don’t believe it does much for growing their following. Pornhub has gotten better for smaller creators but so many things are lost in their terrible tagging and indexing that they’re lost in the flood.

Topical community environments like reddit on the other hand let’s them show their specific content to a group that’s primed to like it. Mods are keeping the focus narrowed, so you’re less likely to compete against the same reposted clip from a decade ago that has little connection to the tags affixed. Pretty similar reasons for why it did so well on Tumblr as well.

You’re probably right. I think it matters more to content creators than consumers? Like, posting porn to Reddit is often advertising? And like anything, people must get some form if satisfaction interactions on specialty subs. You can’t just go to Pornhub and upload your favorite foot porn, right? Get upvotes, get that tiny dose of dopamine. Get to comment about how beautiful the girl is, hoping maybe she’ll like your complement more than the other thirsty guys’.

Social media, man. Interaction, even meaningless… it’s its own drug.

in a better format than a link aggregator.

Wouldn’t that also apply to any image content then (like comics, memes, infographics, etc)? It doesn’t stop it from being popular. The important thing is simply finding a site that allows your specific content and that doesn’t heavily compress it.

Reddit couldn’t meet their own deadlines. I’m using infinity on android, and its still working, at least to view content when logged out.

The apps that don’t work either chose to close, or had their their api keys revoked.
