Absolutely no regard for the thoughts or desires of anyone other than WASPs? This is a picture from the 50s, right enough.

*Cue the sounds of POC being beaten within an inch of their lives for drinking from the wrong fountain *

Black people in America during the 50’s were not treated well. They were hung, beaten, had their homes and communities destroyed often. There were also separate facilities such as schools, restaurants, and fountains. Many places were specifically “White Only.” There were Sundown Towns that pretty much made it illegal to be black after sundown. There were books (green book) written and circulated to make it easier for POC to find hospitable places to travel.

This is not to say everything is all fine and dandy, but POC are usually not the ones dreaming about “the good old days.”

I apologize for wasting your time and effort with that comment. What I was alluding to is that you used “que” instead of ‘cue’. lol

I will say that i still appreciated your comment and that you are exactly right about racism in the US.

Well according to a doctor, since lot of people are not talking vaccine now, polio is coming back and the government has added polio vaccine as one of the requirements last year for people. I had to take adult polio vaccine because I didn’t have records that I took it as a child (which I didn’t think would need because it was compulsory for children when I was little).

Well, you have to give it to the 50s. They were closer to shooting Nazis than voting them into the White House.

It’s a “The past is fucked up”, not “These are all bad people”. In fact, the molester grandfather is the only bad person there.

Getting preventable diseases that have lifelong effects sucks. Being forced to stay in the closet sucks. Being medicated as an alternative to socially undesirable behavior rather than a genuine attempt to alleviate distressing and handicapping symptoms of mental illness sucks. Being stuck in gender roles sucks.

I’m saying that they’re in the same panel, moron. Not that they shouldn’t have a panel of their own. It’s a right wing talking point that being gay is to be a pedophile, and this reinforces it by putting them on the same level.

That is not the intention of the meme, and not the way it’s read. Are we supposed to also think that young girls wishing to go to college is also an equivalent to rape just because it’s in the same panel? What sense is there to that? You have misinterpreted the meme. The meaning is as follows: the 50s sucked, gay men were forced to be in the closet, drug use was rampant, women’s rights sucked, sexual abuse was unchecked, disease was rampant, etc. and everyone just pretended life was perfect.

The world doesn’t revolve around right wing talking points, and neither should you. The idea of this meme is so simple, yet you can’t see it because of these arguments in your head. Take a break from the internet, seriously.

Because it’s fucked up to have to hide your sexuality, and foster a family that you likely don’t truly want. It’s also pointing out how awful we handled healthcare back then. The kid has polio because medicine was a mess. It’s not vilifying the dad or son.

Yes it’s fucked up, you know what’s also fucked? Reinforcing right wing talking points such as “being gay is a sickness” or “all gays are pedos”. Jfc how dense are you all in this comment section to not see that by not distinguishing good, neutral and bad people they’re all just lumped in together with the worst of them.

        Fucking sheep I stg.

It’s not an image of bad things or bad people, it’s an image of thinks that fucking suck. Being secretly gay, as in, unable to come out. Not being allowed to dress how you want it get an education. Having a debilitating illness. Having such a shitty home life because of bullshit gender roles that you require drugs just to get through the day. No repercussions for sexual assault and a continuing cycle of sexual abuse. All shitty things.

You’re the one being a piece of shit, friend. You’re attacking people who are disagreeing with you, and refusing to even consider that they may have a different perspective. When the entire world is telling you one thing, you may not believe it, but you should at least consider that your perspective and theirs may be different, and consider whether they’re right.

Also, inb4 accusations. I am a gay man, and the only issue I see with this image is it’s stunning lack of people of color worried they’ll be lynched.

Eta, checked acct history. Not worth discussing anything with. Actively hostile in nearly every comment. Just ignore and block the asshole pretending to care about progressive issues. Bad faith actor likely out to cause disagreement and leave a bad taste in people’s mouths.

“pretending to care” fuck you, asshole. I’m a gay man too and instead of ignoring the reality around me like you pretending the right and their bullshit doesn’t exist, I actually give a shit.

Dude, no one is doing that. People are, correctly, calling you out for having abysmal media literacy and being an absolute asshole about it. You twisted an image that everyone else seems to understand into an argument that no one was making. Maybe instead of doubling down, you might consider listening to some of the many people patiently explaining how the meme is the exact opposite of what you’re imagining.

I am entirely convinced the “person” you’re responding to is just trying to make the “SJWs” sound hyperbolically insufferable, and is either a bad actor or a straight up bot. Probably best not to engage.
