And while I am no expert of the workings of a modern combustion engine, I do indeed have an understanding of how a combustion engine works. I also know what reaction takes place and I know the average fuel consumption of an average European car.

It’s a controlled combustion. Not an explosion. Explosion is uncontrolled expansion of gases (also includes expansion without chemical reaction)
