Does anyone recommend a VPS to run Nextcloud? @selfhost
I convinced my brother to stop paying for Office Online and give us this money to use a self-hosted Nextcloud.
I would go with a managed Nextcloud provider, it’s such a pain to manage self hosting Nextcloud specifically.
Oracle have a great free tier. For free (not a trial, but forever free), you can get a virtual machine with 24gb RAM, and storage of 200gb. you might wanna consider that.
If you do choose to use oracle, I’ll note you that you do need a credit card, tho it’ll not be charged unless you manually upgrade your account to paid account.
I’m not advertising them, I just really think they’re great and I’m using it myself.
Be extra vigilant with your backups though, free stuff always has a higher chance of weird stuff happening, once they just removed my VPS after my trial ended and told me to re-create it.
Of course. Need to be extra cautious so you don’t get a surprise bill for your birthday.
That’s what I liked more about Oracle as compared to AWS or GCP etc’, is that you need to manually upgrade your account to paid account. and if u don’t then you just can’t create another machine or another block storage.
But still it’s extremely important to read every word so you know what you’re getting yourself into.
If all you want is Nextcloud, you are probably better off getting a managed service like this: https://www.hetzner.com/storage/storage-share/
Agreed. Not much more expensive than a VPS and saves you a lot of headaches.
Linode, Digital Ocean. I’ve worked with both in the past, but that was years ago so I don’t know how things are now.

I’ve been at Contabo for years before moving my server home, was always happy with them. Just for something like Nextcloud you want a lot of storage space which gets expensive fast with a VPS…
