On version 0.19 you can block instances so that you don’t see any posts from that instance, instead of having to block communities one by one, you still see comments from users of that instance in other posts so it isn’t completely blocking the instance.

I’m going to be jumping ship should .world federate with Threads. I’ll find a different instance.

I know we will be able block Threads individually, but I don’t agree with federating with them on ethical principles.

I feel like it’s a failure to insulate the users from extremism and a company that deserves absolutely no trust or endorsement.

Edit: Blocking Threads on an individual basis does not prevent Threads users’ comments from being displayed on federated instances. Even if users Block Threads, they will still be exposed to the rampant hate, harassment, and extremism on the platform.

Thanks for sharing. I’ll be voicing my opposition in hopes that it contributes to changing that status.

According to a post by one of the LW admins in mastodon, they won’t think about defederating unless it causes them “trouble”

Well let’s hope massive outrage by the majority of their userbase falls into the category of “trouble” then.

Except i genuinely don’t see their being massive outrage, as the user can block the instance so why would they need to defederate?

Blocking the instance does not stop Threads comments from being displayed on any federated instance.

Even if a user blocks Threads, they will still be exposed to misinformation and hateful, extremist comments/users.

Ruud is generally pro-Threads federation. We have a lot of time to change his mind though. I think he knows his stance is outnumbered something like 5 to 1.

I agree. The .world admins have been very down to Earth and reasonable thus far. I’m hoping they see reason here and do not make a decision in opposition to the majority of their userbase, which also threatens the safety of their users.
