Enough that a former revolutionary, Franz Sigle, was promoted to general, because German immigrants who’d also fled in 1848 looked up to the guy and were willing to join to serve under the guy.

The KKK was founded in 1865.. The Democratic Party was founded in 1828 while the Republican Party dates back to 1854. By the 1980’s, the party swap was all but complete.

It’s not comparable at all. Democrats were literally the party of slavery. Then Roosevelt came along with The New Deal, pushing them to the left. Then the civil rights movement began, and the “Dixiecrats” (racist southern Democrats) had enough and left the party over it.
Racist, anti-integrationist Dixiecrats like Strom Thurmond remained hardcore Republicans until the day they died.
The “Democrats” that created the KKK are the basis for the modern Republican party.
