In the GOAT debates, there’s constant “oh if we brought back person X and they could use computers they’d wipe the floor with everyone”.

This is the opposite.

Which GOAT contender would do the worst if they were brought into the modern world and access to the technology we have?

I think Fischer and Karpov would probably do the worst, since Fischer would immediately be drawn into “alt”-right cults and get cancelled even sooner due to his racist, sexist and psychotic views. On the other hand, he might get access to psychiatric care for his paranoid schizophrenia.

Karpov would end up licking boots the same as always, so he’d actually end up in CarJackin’s situation.

I think Tal might “defect”/change federations to canada for the legal weed and enjoy internet pornography.

Morphy might actually get his shot at the world champ title.

Botvinnik might be a dark horse since he might be able to get an edge due to being able to customise engines by himself and get unexpected prep.

EDIT I started the thread by going off topic? go me! EDIT

And the bland award would go to Euwe, Capablanca and Lasker; I don’t think their lives would change at all since they were mild mannered people who lived mostly regular lives. Euwe and Lasker were mathematicians before, and would end up basically like MVL. Capablanca was agreeable, so through social connections he would surive whatever the social change Cuba went through, and make it out the other side, like Leinier Domínguez.

Lasker would get wrecked by a modern chess engine. He enjoyed playing esoteric ideas that a computer would punish him dearly for.

damn, good thing that he’s playing against people then, isn’t it?
