Would have been a banger 7 years ago. Now my and all people I know‘s Minecraft Groups have disbanded and the hype is gone. Hypixel is a shell of it‘s former self.
And it is pretty “meh”
Its a half-baked minecraft clone. It was hype when it was announced, but right now all the cool parts about it could be Minecraft mods. It does not stand out.
I’ve been playing it a fair bit, a little rough around the edges in some parts but it’s very fun, and I think it has a good future.
Not on Steam, using their proprietary launcher and careful language about their level of support for Linux.
I know this dance, I’m not falling for it.
We’re lucky Steam is currently doing good by gamers but when we get a chance to not to be solely dependent on them, you should encourage that.
Valve is merely the least bad corporate overlord. But they sure do control the shadows on your cave wall.
Not on Steam
Not wanting to give the 30% cut is legit.
Sure. So is me not giving them 100% due to their decision of not being in a trusted platform.
Being on steam doesnt immediately mean they’re trusted. Look to the recent games that were malware stealing from charaties for example.
Minecraft is also an example of a off platform trusted game with their own proprietary launchers for Java/bedrock. (or third party but also off platform)
And basically fucking everyone hates the Minecraft launcher, most alternatives are basically malware or have endless fucking problems.
With like a single third party client that we all just hope to God doesn’t die.
It’s not a great time.
Look at prism launchet, free open source with great mod integration. And on linux.
Being on steam doesnt immediately mean they’re trusted
Being on Steam means I’ll download the game, and it will run on my stable environment, regardless if the studio closes down or decides the launcher is no longer Linux compatible.
Look to the recent games that were malware stealing from charaties for example
Something that happens once in a blue moon and is immediately caught by Valve? I’m good.
Minecraft is also an example of a off platform trusted game with their own proprietary launchers for Java/bedrock.
Which ends up requiring a third party to maintain a Linux launcher because the official one was sold to Microsoft which makes it problematic… Are you trying to prove my point for me?
Just wait it will eventually be put on Steam.
As with all games, don’t buy it for what it could be, only buy it if it’s good value right now.
My initial impressions in Linux are that it runs great and is fun to play.
And according to their own server manual, they might be supporting in-game pay shops for servers in the future.
Future Additions – Integrated Payment System
A payment gateway built into the client that servers can use to accept payments from players. Optional but encouraged.
So I’m happy to wait to see how hard they’re going to be pushing this and MTX in general …
The group that originally started development and shelled out to buy the IP back from Riot owns Hypixel, the largest MTX Minecraft server on the internet.

using their proprietary launcher
https://launcher.hytale.com/builds/release/linux/amd64/hytale-launcher-latest.flatpak
Not tried it but it’s a Flatpak. I’d say it’s a positive.
The launcher works great. One really nice touch: the login button on the launcher opens your web browser so you can use a password manager.
I assume they decided not to publish on Steam because of their proximity to Minecraft, whose players are already used to having an extra launcher.
Played it for about 5 hours, really fun so far but I have no idea how much there is yet since it just released in EA. I didn’t buy it, got it through other means, and won’t give them my money until full release and only if they do well with monetisation, this Linux support, controller support etc.
Which distro/de do you use?
flatpak is platform independent, but works flawlessly for me on Bazzite/Fedora
Is this anything like og cube world, before the official release?
I doubt that, if you’re looking for an OG Cube World like you’re probably looking for Veloren
