I bought a bike online that came with some of those hex keys to assemble it the last bit. Turns out, having the hex keys for the most important bits of my bike is pretty handy and I carry them around in my bag now when I ride.

I mean I keep them, but good luck figuring out which one goes to which product. They’re all just in a drawer.

Y’know, I really wish they’d put in a little hidden alcove to keep the bundled tools with the furniture. Just adding a recess to an insignificant, normally hidden corner would be neat. Sometimes you just need to quickly tighten something up, or they’re a really weird measurement that’s a pain to find the right fitting tools for.

Though I guess it’s been decades since the capitalist market cared about customer convenience over manufacturing costs, so… not holding my breath.

I recently got a makita yard tool that has a dedicated spot to hold an allen key in the handle. It’s a nice touch that shows the designers actually talk with people who use the tool.

who are you who are so wise in the ways of science?

That is a such a fantastic idea. I will start just taping these things into a little nook going forward. Surprised Ikea hasn’t done something like this

I will start just taping these things into a little nook going forward.

This is what I do, along with any spare parts like screws. Put them in a plastic bag and then tape or staple them somewhere on the underside.

I know right? I was thinking, “wait a minute, why the fuk are all of mine in a combined useless box when this makes so much sense!?” the whole time I was typing that up.

I’m not sure I would trust tape, but why the hell haven’t I been keeping the tools in at least the parts that have storage, damn what’s delivered?? A separate semi-hidden but easily accessible spot sounds … so damn convenient on those rare occasions.

I have a 1-gallon bucket at work, full of random hex wrenches… As well as a drawer with nice sets of each size.
