It had a smaller following but it was 2010 onwards when it got significantly popular in the US, to the extent that the PR junket took in North America and Comic Con, and episodes were filmed there as a part of a bulkier co-production agreement. This coincided with the move to HD production.
That’s fair, but anecdotally, even as somebody who was not very social at the time, I encountered a lot of people who were huge fans of the show in the Tenant days.
It popped off in the US under David Tenant but continued to take off after Matt Smith took the role.
