Recently, it has been revealed that India has already started the construction work of its first two S5 class Nuclear Ballistic Missile Submarine. This submarine will be the largest and the heaciest submarine ever built by India which will weigh around 13,500 tons. It will be double of the already existing Arihant Class SSBNs in both size and weight.
This big size will ensure a higher and enhanced payload, stealth with integrated stealth technology and the ability to carry more Submarine Launched Ballistic Missiles. This will also ensure that the S5 submarines will be able to patrol for longer durations farther away from home waters.
The first submarine of this class is said to be delievered by early 2030 followed by the delievery of another three by the late 2030. Its number makes sure that deterrence is maintained and atleast one submarine is at patrols at all times.
The initiation of Construction of S5 Class shows a shift of India from testing phase to a more mature design and construction phase. India is doing exceptionally well in SSBNs according to me from a past few decades according to me and lets hope we do such exceptionally well even in SSNs and Disel Electric Submarines in which we currently lack.
