What pisses me off is when people think of themselves in my position and fail to understand it.
Happens all the time
“If I was trans, I’d see a therapist instead of taking hormones!”
When therapists were the ones who got me on hormones to begin with, because gender affirming care is the only treatment for gender dysphoria that exists.
“If I was poor, I’d just work harder.”
What do you mean you’d work harder? I have five hour shifts every day, I get paid the same amount whether I’m super anal about cleaning or if I just hit the hot spots and watch fucking Tubi on my phone in the bathroom for the remaining three hours. Not that I do the latter of course, my own sense of pride in my work will not allow that.
I’ve learned that some people think empathy means putting yourself in other people’s shoes and asking how you’d react to their situation.
If I were in your situation, I would just do XYZ.
Real empathy is knowing there are differences between yourself and others and trying to understand that.
