Explanation: Oliver Cromwell was the ruler of the UK after the execution of their king, during which a short-lived military dictatorship was instituted in place of a monarchy. He was a Puritan, a member of a strain of Protestant Christian belief in the early modern period which regarded much of then-modern society as decadent and corrupt.

One of their targets of ire in particular was… Christmas. For being too celebratory and self-indulgent. And Catholic.

Puritans were interesting bunch, like they looked around at 16th century england and decided that people are having too much fun after a bloody civil war.

Puritanism is the cause of many of the problems with the current world, such as discomfort with sexuality and the nobility of suffering

My understanding is that the Christmas he sought to destroy was very much worthy of destruction… violent rape orgies, basically. I don’t know how much of that is true, but it seems quite plausible from various things I’ve read.

While Christmas celebrations could become wild, as in the modern day, the core of it was that Puritans disapproved of excess and pomp in general, not that there was some form of chaotic orgy going on.
