My first thought was that he wasn’t being a dick, but asking a weirdly specific question to send the patient into several seconds of “wtf”, which would be a great way to keep them distracted from a numbing shot or something.

After reading the other comments here, I don’t think that’s what he was going for, but I’ll ask my patients the most random shit I can think of just to keep their focus on anything other than the pain.
