I’m just so tired of paying taxes and then having to spend more money to support various organisations to fight the government using my money against me. Even sending representatives emails about these issues just feels like spending 5-10 mins of my time to write it, then paying for 5 mins of their time to get back a long version of “yea sure”. I might as well just start setting money on fire instead, same outcome less effort.

Fuck off, I’m not paying £1.8B for a digital ID that I don’t even want!

What’s wrong with my Blockbuster membership card?

I don’t think that’s how this works. Labour will spend your money how it sees fit and you’ll like it.

We’re constantly told that the country is broke, taxes will need to go up, old ladies will need to freeze, the disabled don’t deserve what few benefits they get… but we’ve got 1.8B to spend on a scheme that will eventually balloon to 4B+ so that hackers and fraudsters can get access to every piece of information about everyone all in one place, just so we can be spied on even more than we already are.

    Fuck Reeves.

    Fuck Starmer.

Fuck Labour, and anyone that voted for those cunts.

Voted for them as opposed to who? Zack didn’t have our back last election exactly, it was them vs reform & Tories odds are it may come down to that again if the press finds dirt on Zack. I’m trans so trust me I don’t love the paternalistic red tories, but I don’t personally blame anyone for voting for them.

When there’s nobody worth voting for, I refuse to play their game. I’m a proud ballot spoiler. Some will say I threw away my democratic right, but when my right is worth as much as pissing in an ocean of piss, it’s not worth having. I’m sure plenty of people here feel some sort of victory for placing Cameron-Hiding-Behind-A-Red-Rosette into number 10 because “at least it’s not the other one”, and I likewise have the same feeling about leaving a message of dissent that a couple people will be forced to read.

Oh your a real rebel you are.

If you don’t vote for anyone then there’s no reason for any party to care about you. So your not doing anything by refusing to vote.

You speak as if these shithead politicians actually care about us and what we have to say. Sorry, but that’s utterly delusional, and one look at what’s going on in this country makes that very clear. Voting clearly doesn’t do anything, otherwise things would actually be changing now that someone else was voted in. So you can chalk it up to me being some edgy little rebel with a chip on my shoulder if you like, but I will continue to spoil ballots and talk shit to pricks in power until we actually get some real change or I’m dead, and I know exactly what one of those will happen first.

            And it’s “you’re” not “your”.

Yeah voting doesn’t do anything so apathy is clearly the solution to that problem. Jesus Christ, you do understand don’t you that if you completely disengage with political system they will ignore all of your complaints. The only way to achieve any kind of progress is to vote accordingly and there are progressive parties, you vote for those progressive parties and if enough people do it you get progress.

Of course the alternative is to just be a whiny pain in the arse, in which case you’re getting ignored.

But other than being the stereotypical stick in the mud, well done. You’re a genius.

They have no idea who I did or didn’t vote for when I complain about them, so it’s completely possible to both complain as well as not vote for anyone at all. A spoiled ballot indicates that you intend to vote, but that nobody running for election is suitable, which is exactly how I feel. Spoiled ballots need to be read by multiple people, generally including the candidates, in case they feel my paper indicates a vote for them. My spoiled ballots have been seen and sent a message to more people than an x in a random box ever will. So yes, I do think it’s a clever move to spoil a ballot as opposed to being a good little voter and putting my x in the box like the other ~99.7% of voters. If more people did the same, that would say more than voting for a specific person ever will.

I thoroughly dislike the idea of a digital ID, but I still believe it would massively improve the Government’s ability to detect fraud, avoid multi-agency failures and support better data-led decision making - I could conceivably see these changes leading to significantly more than £1.8 billion in savings over a relatively short time-span.

This does not mean I support it in any shape, but I think it’s important to acknowledge that it isn’t only a means of better controlling people, but it could offer real tangible efficiency savings.

edit: On no, the downvote brigade is here and they have no time for reasoned debate.

If we had capable leadership, I’d absolutely agree with you. Evidence is telling me that’s just not happening, and not going to happen any time soon, though. Instead, it’s far more likely any data they do get will be “anonymised”, bundled up and sold off to a company the person making the decision has a large stake in, if not by this government than by the next.

No idea why would would be downvoted without a comment, though. It might be wishful thinking, but your commentary is legitimate.

We don’t need a new digital id, we need new ventilators for babies and bullet proof vests for soldiers. Or, being a bit more serious, why not use it to extend HS2

£293,000 per meter. You could extend HS2 by 6 km. It wouldn’t even get another stop.
