i hated the introduction of section 31 at first; but i think it was necessary to balance out the seemingly unrealistic reality of the star trek universe and to tether it closer to current day events like the klingons and romulans did as stand ins for the soviets and chinese.
western liberals (americans in particular) have a lot of difficulty of seeing past the propaganda that reinforces our world views. it’s propaganda created by our governments and section 31 is a clear stand in for the cia (or mi6) like this video points out. so it makes sense to agree that section 31 is necessary, but not for the same reasons that the narrator points out.
the narrator asserts that section 31’s pragmatism is necessary like it is in real life; but real life shows those of us who pay enough attention how much pointless death, pain and violence that the cia’s actions (along state department’s manufactured consent to justify it) have wrought upon the world in examples like gaza, ukraine, nepal, cuba, chile, etc. as well as upcoming atrocities in nigeria, mexico and venezuela.
the impact of social media live streaming the genocide makes it clear that the awareness that the attention payers posses will become common knowledge and under such circumstances star trek fans will come to see section 31 to be as anachronistic as the original impetus for klingon empire, romulan star empire, or the events of the moon called praxis are to us now.
they’ll see the justifications that sisko, starfleet command, and the video’s narrator holds as products of a time when oligarchies have full freedom to do whatever it takes to maintain their hegemony based on profit, including creating undercover police forces that enact their will upon a world that keeps trying to become a better place like star trek’s universe is despite the oligarchies’ best efforts.
