Yes there is a walmart, but only one actual grocery store, and it now stock frozen sushi.
Update: I shared this picture with my local gaming group, one of them went and picked up a tray.
He tossed it into the fridge and tried it this morning.
I had the first piece. It is supposed to be “Refrigerated Only” by the packaging, but honestly, with a fridge thaw, it tastes just fine. I’ve had plenty worse than that.
If I was not vegetarian I would give it a try. The closest place to get sushi to us is an hour drive.
“Fully cooked”
It’s a California Roll, so I guess that makes sense.

I had something like that once from Aldi. It said on the package to heat it in the microwave. I figured it couldn’t hurt to follow the instructions… It was so incredibly bad…
I was already upset at the frozen sushi but you just had to go and make this microwave sushi comment. I think I’m done for the night.
I saw it on Lidl. I looked disgusting.
You’re braver than I’ll ever be for trying.
That’s devious
When I was working in the middle of the desert near death valley on solar power plants, I tried sushi at some Chinese joint. Holy shit it made me so sick hahaha.
I hate it.
Mildly repulsive.
If you’ve had this before and know what to expect then by all means, enjoy away. But if you’re expecting this to be anything like more traditional sushi you will be sorely disappointed.
I don’t know what to expect. How does it compare to fresh?
My main problem with this stuff is the rice. It’s not really individual grains, it’s congealed into a solid, dry mass. Very unpleasant.
It’s absolutely awful.
My sushi journey started with a similar item from Costco, however not frozen.
Growing up we were forced to take fish liver oil, and any time I tasted sushi all I could taste was fish oil. But the CA rolls from Costco did not have that fish oil taste. After eating it for years I was able move onto better sushi.
I don’t know the brand, or even where it was bought, but my experience with, like, prepackaged sushi is that it seems to have a stronger flavor, though less refined in a sense. They also seem to have a tendency to put a bit of wasabi in nigiri under the fish. I think also a tendency to have a lot of surimi with strong flavor.
Wouldn’t complain about having it though, it’s still nice, mostly just ends up feeling kinda samey.
Not sure how that tastes but have heard stories of frying some in mayonnaise.
Fully Cooked! Nice
Right? I hate how most sushi comes raw and you have to cook it yourself 😡
That’s fine, I wouldn’t touch frozen grocery store ngiri with a thousand-foot pole.
Same with steak tartare
Yes they are not cutting any corners.
Oh no.
That seems like it’s supposed to be the grab and go kind that’s not frozen when you buy it.
If it’s gonna be previously-frozen sushi, better it should still be frozen so at least you know when you started thawing it out.
It’s typically just the fish that was previously frozen, and that’s to kill any parasites. I’ve never seen the entire maki roll frozen lmao, of course that will be bad.
Yes it’s definitely not ideal. But in a wasteland with no sushi at all I suppose it’s… something. Freezing would help keep the rice from becoming dangerous, as well as the surimi and mayo. But it’s not great for texture.
I see these at 7/11 just with a different label. I’m sure it’s all from the same factory.
I thought this was dull men at first
After I posted here, I realized that would have been a better choice.
Eew.
Why Frozen instead of refrigerated?
To make it gross?
If you’re in America, all fish is flash frozen anyway, even “fresh” sushi or sashimi.
Flash freezing individual fish feels a bit different than taking out that (presumably thawed) fish, using it to make sushi rolls, and then refreezing it.
Edit: My perception was obscured by disgust and I didn’t realize these are California rolls and don’t have fish, but the point stands. Frozen rice and frozen avocado are fucking gnarly. Frozen avocado especially is a sin.
CrabStick is still usually made from fish.
They use surimi, don’t they? Fake crab made from fish paste. Still fish.
Oh yeah didn’t even think about the avocado. Good point!
Thats fake crab. It’s pre cooked before even going into the rolls.
Extended shelf life maybe?
