Bertrand Russell was a great thinker and a very decent human being. He should be more well known.
That’s the thing: the best human being is decent, no such thing as a good human.
A British aristocrat just after the nadir of the depression says the poor just need to work harder. I have some thoughts:

The class war has always been going on and if you are reading this you’re not on the winning side.
Capital has no delusion as to who its enemies are. But it profits when you don’t.

I’m sure there’s at least one trust fund baby on here somewhere.
i mean that’s not why i have a trust but yeah family helped build it since, being disabled, it’s difficult to find a place that doesn’t want to try to pay me 1/3 the market rate.
Can you send me 1/3 the market rate of $100,000?
In general millennials stand a pretty decent chance of inheriting something, and there’s lots of those here. Trust fund babies maybe less so
Its already been stated a bunch, but no one has pointed out that social security is a handfull of years away from collapsing entirely. The elderly are targetted egregiously from “buy my bible” to “donate to my fund to stop the vil left” to “make sure you pay your tithe to the local church”. Theres also the massively overpriced jewelry commercials targetting seniors and the health coverage scams, but those arent directly Trumps fault so i find them less entertaining to bring up. Either way, the elderly are hemorrhaging money almost at the same rate the rich are getting richer.
Inherit what? Most boomers that owned hotook out reverse mortgages on them, and most that you talk to proudly state that they are going to spend it all before they die. Few millennials are gonna get anything from their parents.
Same with us Gen Z with Millennial older siblings, and a gen X mom and boomer father. Anything I stood to inherit (despite being “free labor” for eight housing unit from ages 6 - 24) I stand to inherit from my silent gen grandfather who made a trust I’m not allowed to utilize or hear about till my grandma dies. Plus the odds are not on my side to even have me outlive my 75 year old father, ha.
The only inheritance I got was a used car
Hahaha! That’s funny. You think the massive industries aimed at retiring Boomers are planning to do anything but suck them completely dry? No, there won’t be anything left once they’re gone, just horrible inequality like we have now.
See also the outrage at poor people being allowed to purchase things like candy and soda on SNAP. Always wrapped up in some patronizing faux concern of how they might abuse it or how the program was meant for healthy food and how being allowed to do so is why so many poor people are obese. When in reality being poor correlates with obesity because those calorie dense foods are simply the ones that are cheapest and most readily available.
Like, just say that you think that poor people don’t deserve to have tasty treats unless they can buy them with their own money. Just say that because all my time is taken up by taking care of my disabled wife and disabled kids and therefore I can’t work so we survive off disability benefits and SNAP that my kids don’t deserve to to have the one glass of soda I let them have with dinner.
What they want are slaves. That’s it, they want actual slaves, and they knowingly and willingly use them wherever they can get away with it.
Since that doesn’t work in most of the world, they’ve been longing for a fully automated work force. They’ve been working toward that goal for centuries, and now it’s in sight. That’s why they’re pushing so hard for AI. Using the masses to train AI is the last task they have for us.
I don’t know how they imagine an economy to work without humans working. But, they seem to want us around, because they keep taking away birth control etc. They want more humans for some reason, even though we won’t have jobs? I think it won’t work, I think they’re fooling themselves, and I think they’ve FA a long time, and they’re about to FO.
It also explains the push for human like robots for household tasks. It can only be the need to have power over someone else because we already have robots in the kitchen.
They need an underclass to feel superior to. They aren’t rich and powerful if they kill all the poor, they become just regular people.
Also, be wary of any CEO talking in favor of a “4 day work week” as what they most likely really mean is to cut people’s hours to part-time so they don’t have to pay for benefits.
The US is a seriously fucked country…
In the EU a “4 day work week” means exactly what it says on the tin - less work for the exact same pay as before.
This is what the right wants to return to. Children being forced to work 12 hour days.
Bertrand Russell? As in the mathematician who wrote Principia Mathematica? Damn my respect for him has grown guess I should read some of his philosophical work
The quote is from In Praise of Idleness, a slim and serious but entertaining little book.
His other philosophy is worth reading as well.

Back then boomers could buy houses, cars and enjoy holidays while raising 3-4 kids and only with 1 paycheck, we can’t do that today with 2 paychecks and working on the side.
Fun Fact, this lifestyle was what the minimum wage was intended to provide when it was enacted. FDR talked about this. If somebody was working a full time job, then they should be able to have that standard of living. No matter what kind of job they were doing.
I’m crying… But not of joy…
One of many reasons the man had such a generational run that they amended the fucking constitution to keep it from happening again and have spent the better part of 40 goddamn years tearing it all down.
In 1935 the UK and the world were just creeping out from the Great Depression and many governments were building large welfare programs for the first time. This was 10 years before Boomers even started to be born
We all know how it would actually be implemented. Workers will see no reduction in expected output compared to a 5 day week, and their pay will effectively be cut to 4/5th of what it was previously without a corresponding raise in hourly rate. They will most likely lose benefits because they “aren’t working enough hours” to be considered full time.
Without corresponding societal changes first, workers will get even more screwed than they already are.
…in the USA.
